Searching for Jobs...

This past 12 months has seen an almost Lazarus-like improvement in my mobility. Back still hurts like hell, but I'm not being (literally) crippled by it every other week.

It's improved so much that I''ve even started looking for work!!!

The 'agency' thing is bugging me though. Why are so many jobs hidden behind an 'agency' advert? I have no intention of applying for any job that I don't know who the employer is, so why not just name them in the ad!?

Then there's the application process... every feckin one is time consuming and different from the next, so there's little room for cutting and pasting! Has life become so hectic that prospective employers can't just read a cover letter and CV and extract the information that helps them make a decision?

And then... what to apply for!? Ex-copper in late 30's with a 5 year employment gap due to injury convalescence... I'm hardly hot-property

The only MUSTS in my job-search requirements are no heavy-lifting, no managerial responsibility (don't need the stress), and no night-shift (done my bit). I'm happy to re-train and to work from the bottom. Basically looking for monkey-see-monkey-do stuff for a wee bit more than minimal wage and in return the employer gets someone who's 100% reliable, hard-working and trustworthy.

Any (sensible ) suggestions from the LCB massive as to where and what I should be looking at???

I guess I could be tempted to train to be a driving instructor or HGV driver, but is the work there (and is there an expectation of heavy-lifting that goes with being an HGV driver)?

Cheers amigo's!

I thought that you would be feeling a bit better due to your W/L...

MOD Military Guard Service? Not sure if you have any military bases near you but with the MOD not wanting to spend money on 'proper' MOD plod, they're using civilian MGS more and more. They also like ex-service type folks. Worth a looksy or are you wanting something abit more rewarding?

Cheers Owelly. Good shout, but I should have added that I want to avoid anything security-related.

Good on you Scootz, it's not easy out there.

From the other side of the coin and currently looking for a mechanical engineer the agency thing is equally frustrating. They don't listen to what you ask for, send too many CVs and generally get in the way of a straightforward task (IMHO).

Unfortunately it seems it's all about knowing how to play the game!

Scootz,

Whilst you may have misgivings about using an agency, there are a few advantages to so doing:
1. Cost's you nowt but a bit of time to put together a cv.
2. A decent agency will have access to vacancies not necessarily appearing in your local rag.
3. If you don't like the agency employee looking after your case, walk away, or ask for a different agent.
4. You can specify the positions you'd consider and those you wouldn't.
5. Your cv will get pushed out to dozens of employers. In today's employment market, that can't be a bad thing.
6. You can pull the plug anytime if you're successful elsewhere.

I say this because I chanced on an agency in my ealy 40's in 1989 who got me fixed up in a superb position. I stayed 11 years and then took early retirement. (As you know, I'm ex RAF).
Good luck.

Bob.

Cheers Bob.

I hadn't actually thought about registering with an agency. My micro-rant was aimed at the advertising of positions on job websites... they give the title of the position, the agency listing it, and then bugger all else! I wouldn't mind doing 'blanket' applications to find out a bit more if it was just a case of submitting a CV, but most tend to refer you to multi-field application gathering sites that take an age to complete (if you want to do them right ).
