Newspapers

I have just had ( despite a NO cold caller sign. grrrrrr) a guy round doing a survey regarding the local newspaper.

Did I read it
If so was this everyday

After pointing out my sign , I politely said, no I didn't read their newspapers at all, and before he could butt in with another question, I said newspapers are obsolete these days with the advent of the internet - to which he was most suprised and shocked .

I am alone in my views, as he really was most taken aback at the fact that they are now redundant.

I should have asked him why he was carrying out such a survey, was it due to falling sales???....

Alot of people still buy newspapers, mostly as something to look at on the loo or the train where internet is impractical for alot of people. My Dad (Who is 51) has his local paper delivered everyday.

Electronic ie Internet and TV Red Button has a big problem for me in that often a major story will appear for a couple of hours then quickly get pulled often because some big company has threatened whoever put on the web with legal action, the BBC are particularly bad for pulling stories if anybody remotely connected with the story complains.

Recently there was a major case involving against the directors of the Farepack in which the High Judge hearing the case made some pretty damming comments about the the part the bank involved (HBOS) played in the losses customers suffered. The story appeared on the BBC Internet and red button news as a headline item and and a couple of hours later disappeared completely although it can now be found if you specifically search for it.

I have never been a newspaper buyer, even before the internet age. The only paper I ever got on a regular basis was MCN back in my biking days, then latterly Motoring news when I was racing. For news about wars etc , was all available on the radio or TV.

Also news today is now being reported ' live', as it happens ( look at the thread regarding the Woman F1 test driver - that was on the net within minutes of the incident occurring), not really needing to have to put it to print and to be read maybe a day later than it happened. I am not a tree hugger, so saving paper and its associated wasteages is of no concern to me, but getting up to date news is. Buying a newspaper that was printed in the morning is no real use to me these days.

ETA.

Just found this, and makes for an interesting read, will be interesting in 20 years time to see what happens..

Haven't bought a national paper for years.

I used to use the local paper for advertising cars etc but at £20 for a week or two for a few hundred people to view doesn't seem good value for money when eBay gets you access to thousands.

I get all my news now from the TV and internet. It's instant, up to date and more importantly without opinion. I got really fed up with national papers - even the 'quality' ones being so politically biased and opinionated.

I spent a week in hospital earlier this year and the only one I could tolerate was 'I' the tabloid version of the independent.

I have worked for my local and regional newspaper company for exactly 30 years now, and it is sad to read such comments, but have to admit that a percentage of the comments are not far from the truth.... The newspaper industry has provided me and my family with good life, but not made me rich man and never will.

It is a tough and exhausting industry but still very much alive through the web and free press and still provides a great local service.

It is via these cold calling doorstep surveys we can measure the market and audience demands, I am passionate about the industry I work and I am sure that anyone on here would be the same if they can see what the current economic climate has done to all respective industries.

Local newspapers provide a service not just to local businesses but also to local communities, who may depend on these sheets to spread "The Word" so to speak.

Anyway that's my opinion shared........... Greenie

Thanks for the ' insider' information so to speak, but you have to admit that since the internet came along the the need for a printed version is somewhat outdated ?, I would not have normally answered the door to Cold Callers, but I was expecting a parcel today and thought it may have been that.

Has your readership dropped in recent years for the printed version, most papers now have their own websites and can charge you to view them, which is fine as you would have bought the printed version anyway I guess.

There arent many papers worth reading. The local leeds weekly news isnt worth the paper its printed on. In fact, it annoys me that they waste paper on it, and cause me to waste time walking to the bin.

For proper up-to-date news and analysis, there are a selection of good websites.

National Newspapers are not all about news. There are features, articles and comment, which you don't really get on line.

I have also had the same view over the last few years especially about the daily papers that think the X factor , big brother or some minor celebrity deserves to be on the front page, basically they are just gossip and serve no real purpose.
I am not at all into the green thing but considering the amount of energy and resources used to print and distribute daily gossip it is surprising that the government has not tried to tax news papers yet.

By not buying a 'quality' newspaper you miss most of the news.
The internet and TV will never, ever, give the content, or the wide range, of a newspaper.

Now i disagree, Neither of us have bought a newspaper in years, even when we go away, news is done on the laptop or phone
and i only read the articles that i feel are of any interest to me

But we did go away to weeks ago, and my old m8 pete (65) who is pc iliterate, bought the Daily Express, so i had a thumb through it, but inside was absoloute dribble! and EVERY page had more adverts for usless crap, than any "news"
i say news, as it was dribble about Mrs "ive not got a personality" Beckham, and the likes of these types of morons, who want the money and fame, but object to Paparazzi

and as for the shite like The Sun, oh dear, i didnt even read that crap when i was 13

Sorry, but IMHO, there going down the route of the DODO, and will be extinct within a very few years

The Express ?? says it all. The Express went downhill years ago
Try The Daily Telegraph, Times, Independent or even the Guardian.

Any local regional press can be an institution in any community and play a vital part of that community, the national press sheets play a national part and are taken for granted and in a lot of cases left alone, maybe's because the nation have come not to trust the speal they come out with, but on the other hand the local sheets are at the heart of any community and have no reason to react editorially which will bend the truth.

They play a massive part towards the local community and the small trade businesses who rely a local cost effective way of advertising.

All local and free press newspapers should be supported and maintained to ensure a constitution does not fade and die!

True, same for the Mail.

Each format has it's pluses and minuses, but 'on-line' news will never have the content of a 'quality' paper. Take the BBC news, it's used to advertise BBC programs with it's 'special reports' and probably only covers, at most, ten topics, if that many.

Don't forget, Teletext was said to replace newspapers twenty years ago.

I have been thinking a bit more about this , whilst reading local newspapers to see what Mrs Smith at number 42 did with her false teeth last week maybe of interest to those that are concerned , I think Britain as a whole is changing its attitude towards local affairs. When I was growing up back in the 60's and 70's my parents knew all their neighbours and would regularly visit each others houses and local news was exchanged when that occurred, today I think not many of us can honestly say we know more than one house away, maybe two at the most.

I moved houses 5 years ago, and despite attempting to, never actually had a conversation with my own nextdoor neighbour, they have since moved, but because they were so busy with getting on with their lives that having time out for a chat was impossible for them. This is also a generational thing as well, as when I moved into my new house, the only welcome I got was from an elderly gentleman across the road, who kindly offered to help me unload my possessions into the new house, the younger households just flicked the curtains backwards and forwards. So if the new generation are not that interested in welcoming a newcomer to their street are they really going to buy a local paper to read about it ??.

Also, whilst flicking through the internet news this morning, it is being reported that the DVLA are closing a fair number of their offices to save costs, as all this can now be done online.., its a shame but a sign of whats to come I am afraid.here
