Extra Phone 'Line' - VOIP?
Hi All
I'm thinking about getting an extra phone line into the house and was wondering if anybody has experience of the many VOIP providers -
everything I've read sounds good! We have a pretty reliable broadband connection.
We also have a small (2 line) TIptel phone system that should be able to be plugged directly into a VOIP box allowing all the phones in the network to
access both the BT line and the new line.
Any thoughts?

Ive got a BT Versatility V8 system sitting in the loft that i was hoping to do the same with, but i cant find the information i need to get the right
module to connect it to my broadband and give me extensions etc. It apparently creates virtual lines on existing, but not sure if it can take two
calls at once (Landline number and broadband number).
It came from one of our offices that closed down, so i was just going to use it in the house for the various extensions and conference phone
capability (I'm home based).
Kindest Regards,

Richard - that sounds complicated! My small 'exchange' simply plugs into a phone socket but allows up to 8 extensions and the usual stuff
like paging, conference etc.

All my incomming lines are voip, i use draytel as a provider. The bt line is only ever used for 0800 numbers. In 3 years i've only had one
short outage. Took a little bit of setup to get the best codec for clear speech, however i use a draytek 2820 to handle both the pots(bt) and the voip
lines. The router also does call routing so uses the cheapest path for the outgoing call.
I deliberately decided to use only voip as it gives me the advantage of not losing telephone numbers if you move exchange areas.
I'm in the process of a new build and have been looking at the gigaset dect units, these will handle the pots and the voip, multiple lines etc
all in one small unit.

I use BT VOIP for outgoing calls, costs £5 a month with calls at 5p per call, my quarterly bills are around £20-£30, never had a problem in 2 years.

I use soho66.co.uk for my business. Costs about 2.50 for a basic voip number. I pay a little more as I also have fax. I have it set to redirect to my
work mobile during the day in case I'm not in the office. I pay 10p a minute for mobile calls and 1p minute for landline. I bought a linksys
voip to IP adapter thing that i plug a normal BT phone into and plug that into the broadband router.
I'm looking at the moment to converting the house phone over to voip using the same provider as I can't see why i'm paying so much
for a landline. I believe i can port over the landline number but haven't looked into it properly.
The only issue is they can struggle to identify your property in an emergancy but you can register your details against an emergency database to allow
them to look it up.

Vonage do a pretty good deal for voip.
I could be wrong long time since Ive worked on a Tiptel but I think the voip is for internal extensions they are normally an ISDN switch, what model
is it ?
Richard you'll need the broadband module and backplane for your Versatility if you want to connect voip via Sip trunks.
If you need info u2u me and I'll give you my phone number.
Cheers,
Bob

Thanks guys - some excellent VOIP info!
Bob - the unit is a Tiptel 2/8 - it's about 10 years old - we've had it since new but hardly use any of the features - although my 8 year
old used to enjoy phoning different extensions just to wind me up :-)

I use sipgate for incoming (free, you can pick from most if not all geographic areas) and whichever VoIP provider is cheapest for outgoing
