Hi. - Newbie -

Hi.

As there doesn't seem to be a dedicated 'Greetings' section.. Or if there is, I've spectacularly missed it..
Either way...

My name is Jason.

I was pointed in this direction by ChrisW.
My usual haunting place is XRTwo.com's forum.

However.
As I've picked up a Mk2 Cortina to work on, I've been looking at the idea of rebuilding the rear chassis with something 'like' the Haynes Roadster to make it an IRS system instead of the beam axle and to loose the leaf springs for something a little more modern.

So.
If you see a few stupid posts asking for help or advice that's why.

Hi

Wouldn't you be better just 5 linking the Cortina axle - why make life unnecessarily hard

Welcome to the Madhouse...

Plenty of good advice on here, and not only car related!

5 Point axle will give a worthwhile improvement, and is a lot easier to do.
Is there the room in the back and under the floor for fully independence qand wishbones.

Its an interesting project... but 5 point axle is a lot easier to do, and will give good results.

But then going fully independent... Its because you can!

Cheers

Hi.

Thanks the the welcome and comments.

Why?
Well. Good point.

The Why is mainly two fold.
1: The car is rusty. It's going to need a rebuild at the rear for sure. So a lot of metal coming out and new going in.
2: Leaf springs don't appeal to me. They seem unecessarily complicated and hark back from the dark ages.

Is IRS the answer?
- Honestly I don't know.
It seems like a slightly easier system to understand and work on from a service point of view.
Does it make a handling difference?
I believe so.

Chris actually recommended a De Dion tube system.
It would be possible to use most of the existing pickup points ( assuming they haven't completely rotted away! LOL! ) and still gives an IRS setup. I may even have a suitable de dion tube in the shape of a spare Fiesta rear axle.

5 Link?
Again, I don't know much about it to be honest.
My experience of rear axles is somewhat limited. If you've seen the rear axle under a Mk1/2 Fiesta you'll understand.
Hence why I'm here.
The 'tina is a 4 door. I want to keep the rear seats usable. So 5 link boxes in the floor pan might not really be an option.

Is there room for the IRS system?
I think so.
A lot of the rear of the Cortina will need to be cut out anyway. So as long as I can make it fit without affecting the rear seats, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. The other reason I was thinking of doing it like the Roadster was so that I *could* build the rear setup off the car and bolt it into pick-up points under the car.

Jason.
