office relocation India !

We have just got wind, that the departments that i work in, (22 years) could be relocated to Mumbai India

Whats the deal with redundency payments ? as i am NOT going !!

An offer of redundeny payment has not been made yet, but surely, its not as if the relocation from Gatwick to India, is a bus ride away

Steve

Sorry to hear that Steve... Some very good information is available on the Direct Gov Website including a calculator to work out what statutory redundancy pay you would be entitled to. If you have worked in that role for 22 years, you will likely do very well - if however your contract has changed/ new job title etc in more recent years, you may get less than you hoped.

Just make sure they are doing it by the book. So many companies use some rather questionable practises when making redundancies. Remember, your employer has to be able to show that they have assessed fairly who should be made redundant, so my advice would be to ask to see the criteria you have been assessed against....

Sorry to say but if your company is just paying the legal minimum then you will get 12 years worth, one weeks pay for each year worked (capped at 12 years) if under 40 years old and 1.5 weeks pay if older.

So unless you have massive pay now or have something extra in your contract you wont get much. I think i got £3990 for 13 years work which didnt go far.

Think very hard about court action too, as i went thru this costing me over £4000 and had a solid case to only be let down as it was stretched over 3 months and the judge admitted she didnt have time to read the notes from previous dates so went on the end statements (we ripped them apart on those times too, no notice, no contract, they didnt even follow their own quide and only gave 23 minutes notice from letter to 'meeting'. Yep the company's solicitor just piled on the lyes and got away with it. So my advice is only go to court if you have insurance to pay for the costs!

Good luck.

Sorry about my spelling, im an engineer and only work in numbers.

Check the redunandacy policy as some companies have enhanced redundancy conditions.
You might also want to check the conditions that applied when you first joined as these may still apply to your contract of employment.

The statutory redundancy calculations will provide a number of weeks and this is then multiplied by a fixed weekly rate (not your weekly pay rate!). Enhance policies usually refer to a multiple of the statutory calculation e.g. 1.5 times and some also pay the actual weekly rates if it is higher than the fixed rate.

In addition to notice persionds the other items to potentially (depends if they make you work your notice) factor in:
1) Holiday pay
2) Statutory Maternity Pay
3) Payments in lieu of employer pension contributions
4) Bonus payments
5) Commission payments
6) Car Allowance
7) Payments in lieu of providing life insurance, medical cover or permanent health insurance
8) Contractual payments i.e. any payment where the employee is contractually entitled to it under the terms of the employment agreement

Hope this helps.

sorry to hear that - quite a few of my friends went that way for same reasons.

is relocation not an option? nice hot weather 40+C in summer, curries galore and if you are on the same pay, you'll live like a king, plus gatwick is on your doorstep.

if you're a paid miniumum redunancy then unfortunately it won't go too far, be about 3 to 5 months pay.
