Train to Edingburh - locost

Hi, anyone know of any deals, tips to get cheap train travel to and from Eding?
Taking daughter to Uni open day and going to make a weekend of it.
Managed to get hotel on Tesco vouchers.
Trainline with family railcard (she only looks 15.....) £153 return
Reckon it will cost me about same in diesel and quicker.

Checkout "split ticketing" i.e. where you buy a ticket to an intermediate stop then another on to your destination - according to Martin Lewis on the box a couple of evenings ago you can make some BIG savings doing this.

Fly. If your close to an airport it's usually cheaper.

Looked into it a few weeks ago, from leeds to edinbugger, and the cheapest tickets were usually really early morning, ie 6am etc. Could you not drive to somewhere on the east coast mainline and get a train from there?
