Type 9 alternatives
so come on then, what will mate up to a zetec, be about the same size as a type 9, have sensible gearing, and take 300bhp and good torque all day
long?

Aren't I right in thinking the mt75 is physically bigger than a type 9?

Don't know much about the mx5 box, how big is it? Is a custom bellhousing required? What will it take power and torque wise?

Having not long done an engine and gearbox change on an 08 mx 5 engine had ford stamped all over it,but had chain drive and vvt,oh and is a six speed
box quite long and narrow so maybe good £1500 brand new from mx5 speicalist down this way.

Ford used to own Mazda but not a direct fit to a Zetec

Slightly wider round the main casing. Does still fit a lot of kits though.
BGH geartech do a HD type 9 for about £1500 thats good for 280bhp and 250ftlb (I would imagine more too, thats just the quoted figures so I would
expect some safety tolerance.)

There arnt any gearboxes smaller than the Type9 that are cheap and bolt directly to a Zetec
The T5 is the cheapest box with good ratios that will take 300 bhp
MT75 ratios are worse than the Type 9
The heavy duty V6 type9 has slightly better ratios ( still not as good as T5) and has been used on 200 bhp cars
If you are spending big money on the engine, which you will do if you are looking for 200+bhp out of a Zetec then I am afraid you also need to spend
big money on a gearbox.
With your aim to find 220 to 240 bhp which out of a normally aspirated Zetec would make it a very special engine and probably undrivable I would
consider going Duratec with the MX5 5 speed box cheaper I think

Already running over 240 through the current type 9 but hoping to knock on the door of 300 with the new engine although its the torque that worries me
more than the raw bhp
