Asda Xbox fiasco or a bit of a rant

Bit annoyed at Asda today, worked out ok in the end and no thanks to them but not happy about how we were treated as just a regular customer

Basically my Xbox broke down a month ago halfway through Family guy, itself annoying as I’d really looked after it well knowing how fragile they are (it was one of the first white consoles. Finally after much though I decided to get a replacement rather than wait for the PlayStation 4 and so went to Asda last night to buy just the console, £150 for the current one.

Took it home and opened the box to find the console wasn’t even a new one, very badly scratched, covered with food and dust and when I plugged it in it just beeped and did nothing else! What the smeg?!

Looked more closely at the box and it was very clear the security seal on the bottom had been pealed and then stuck back down as rather than totally transparent it was dark with black smudges.

Off I went back to Asda just an hour after getting it, but took along my dad as well who is great for getting disputes resolved, can’t say it’s one of my strong points.

Well it took about an hour of total bull crap from the store manager to get it resolved, seriously I thought they were going to say they were not going to replace it! The manager actually ended up phoning their head office to get a decision made after my dad simply refused to not get it replaced.

Really to be treated like some thief when I’ve only bought something in good faith from them I thought was disgusting. It was clear the box had been tampered with to any fool. I never got an apology just a load of accusations and bull crap from the manager. After his phone call he said he’d replace it this time and just walked off, what a d$ck.

Just as well I took my dad along though…

Always check the seals before leaving the shop!

Man buys new Xbox...leaves shop
Returns with box and old/damaged/scratched Xbox demanding a replacement.

What would you think in the Manager shoes? You know you are right, he hasn't a clue and has to work to the evidence in front of him.

About to quote exactly the same 95% of us would never buy a new xbox and return are old knakered one in the same box and demand a refund /replacment ( sell it on ebay ).

Not sure about Xboxses but most hardware these days have serial number on box ( + manufacturing date ) If this tied up with the item in the box they should have been more helpfull.

Anyway well done for sticking to your Guns and getting it sorted.

Well in this country you meant to be innocent till proven guilty

Fact is they accepted a returned product without checking the contents first and doing so opened themselves up for this mess

the first and only PC I bought had issues like this - broken returned stuff sold as new
(well know independant shop in edinburgh)

first day I got it it wouldn't run, it had security stickers all over the back so i took it back - turns out they'd 'forgoten' to install a CPU
then the graphics card turnned out to be a much cheaper one than what I paid for
about a month late the CD drive died (complete with loud grinding noises and a chewed CD)
then the hard drive a month after that
then some RAM died

then I started getting all kinds of random errors and blue screens (again) couldn't pin it on any one thing and you couldn't predict when they would happen
so with 1 week left on the warranty I 'accidentally' changed a few BIOS settings so that it wouldn't run and took it in again

while I was waiting I caught them putting someone elses returned broken RAM back in the drawer with all the 'new' ones (and no padding or even anti-static in the drawer either)

then the 'tech expert' [aka: muppet with a screwdriver] had a look at my PC and declared that the motherboard was totally dead - yet I knew all he needed to do was reset the BISO to default and it would work (for a wee while at least...)

at this point I started a bit of a rant just load enough so all the new customers in the shop could here me about the 'pile of s**t' they'd sold me and all the issues I'd had, demanded to speak to the manager and demanded my full refund - obviously he wan't goign to give me it a year on, but I did get all the internals of the PC replaced with new ones (and they were new this time) and a years waranty on all the new bits too - it worked fine ever since but I'll never buy anything from them ever again...

Theres alot of it about and it's a hard one to get around (Used stock being sold as new) as it can happen anywhere.

In the OP's case though unfortunate, I've been in workplaces that have had to deal with this kind of thing from the otherside and you get alot of people trying it on, the fact that you'd only bought it an hour ago probably makes it look more suspicious as he probably thought you'd planned it and had the dodgy unit ready. My Dad works in supermarkets, and he says theres rarely a day he doesn't see someone trying to claim out of date food they've had at home for ages has just been bought, And he's only in store for about an hour that it's open (Night work). You really need to submit a written complaint, but it's not likely to be the guy who you dealt with's fault, more bad store practices with stock, you'll probably find the unit you originally recieved got there from someone claiming they'd just bought it, not used it, and getting a refund.

I know someone that used to work at Asda in an office job. He went to a big meeting where they announced their profits for that year (MASSIVE). They then presented a cheque to a local homeless charity, one of those huge cardboard cheques, local paper there taking pics. They'd just announced their tens-of-millions-of-pounds profit so you'd expect the local homeless charity to get a good amount. £200 on a huge cardboard cheque.

They've worked hard to get their ethical consumer rating of 0/20.

Although I quite accept there are loads of folk try to pull scams especially with high value goods like this

The fact was I wasn't one of them and was as much a victim as the store, however their attitude was I was guilty and they did not want to replace it. It was only that my dad made such a fuss that they conceded

What I've taken from this is to get them to open the packaging store when you buy them and to pay attention to the state of the security seals
