Diesel Generator - Genny Advice

I'm considering investing in a diesel genny to run a welder from, and or to mount in a boat in the future.

I need around 6kva to run my 160amp inverter mig set off, at which point most appear to be diesel, which also fits with the boat plan as petrol on boats is a bit dodgy but wondered what the sites thoughts on this is.

Would love to have a silent cocooned set, but I think its going to be touch and go getting it in an out of the car as it is so thats probably a non starter. If the boat plan goes ahead, I could aways sell it and buy another, although as space is a premium, a custom enclosure might be the way to go, as might watercooled.

Anyway, we are jumping the gun, thoughts on a suitable second hand portable genny? £400 budget manageable?

I had a 'silent' 6kva generator last year to power my lockup, do not even think about putting one of these in the back of your car, it needed a crane to lift off my trailer they are really heavy and really noisy !

It was like new, got £600 for it when I moved out of my lockup.

You will need a decent battery to start one if electric, the one it came with looked like a large bike engine and was useless.

IMHO look for an old open pull cord petrol honda powered set, much lighter and will retain its value, if/when you you put in a boat replace it, although for a boat LED powered TV and low wattage bulbs a little set would be more practical.

The diesel set did run my compressor, 200 amp TIG and 9" grinders, I started off with a 3kva petrol and it failed on all of these so traded up.

Yes, I guess I could do worse the look up the weight of a petrol 6kva. The diesel frame sets appear to be about 90kg so I guess that is too much to lift into a car, even two people thrutching about?

For my welder I was able to run on the 3kva, just not full power, it's electric motors, grinders/ compressors that really kill them with the heavy start load.

If you can cut by hand and clean with a 4.5" grinder you should be okay with a smaller generator set, some good second hand ones on eBay for £200, I would get a lower current one and sell on if not suitable.

Honda also = quiet
