Claiming back Import VAT
Folks,
I've just collected 2 merge collectors that I brought from across the pond, never mind the £8 parcel force handling fee, I got charged £20.02
VAT on a $60, £37 item, Surely 54% VAT is a little excessive!
Has anyone on here gone through the process of claiming the difference back before?
Mini rant over
Regards Dan
The less I worked, the more i liked it.

What Value has the seller put on the customs form? £20 does sound excessive, for a £37 item there is no import/customs duty, so you should only have
paid VAT on £37 and the UK Shippers handling fee.
Customs will charge the VAT on the value the seller states, or, their estimation of the goods value if they are in doubt, although how they manage the
latter I can't figure.

The value on which you pay VAT is the cost of the item + postage and packing cost.
So was the £37 the cost of the item or the total cost of the item including post, packing etc.
Also the VAT is payable on the revenue's assessment of the value of the item not just what the seller/sender puts on the customs label. For
most things they go by what's on the label but if you pay £200 for 100g of gold they are going to charge you VAT on the £2,500+ that its worth
not the £200 you paid.
