Inner tie rod removal and fitting tool needed

Hi all,

Working on refurb in the steering rack and I need to fit new tie rods.

Never having done this before and baffled by the lack of flats on the joint to get a spanner on I googled and realised there is a special tool for the job.

Q1. Has anyone around Winchester or Basingstoke got one they would be willing to lend for a day or two?

Q2. Failing that, has anyone got a tip or technique using ordinary tools?

Cheers
Nick

I attacked mine with some stilsons, then filed the burrs down when done.

As they are staked it takes a lot of force to get things moving.

OK, have a set of those.

How did you hold the rack stationary, just clamp the case in a vice or clamp the actual rack itself?

Don't want to damage the rack or casing!

Cheers
Nick

I ground flats on mine - I only needed to take ~0.5mm off each side to create a flat that a 32mm spanner would go on, so I'm sure it won't have compromised the strength.

Hi
Vice & stilsons to remove & put back.
Before re-assembly make sure parts are thoroughly degreased
Use threadlock + nice & tight.
File off any nibs as ness.
Good luck.

Clamp the rack itself not the outer casing and use soft jaws for the vice although the tool your asking for does the job on the car it's best not to take any chances

Managed to complete the rack rebuild on my 205 project. The above tip on Stillsons worked perfectly

Little Photobucket story here showing the strip down and rebuild, might be useful for others doing the same job....

After stripping it down and some advise on the 205 GTI Drivers forum, I replaced the £3 plastic bush in the rack housing itself before fitting the new track rods. Problem solved and all play removed from the steering . That's the complete front suspension and steering renewed/overhauled now. Car feels sooo much better although it now needs to loosen up a bit

Took it to get the tracking checked at lunchtime and it was 0.25 degrees out, having reassembled everything by eye I was quite pleased with that.
