Mower....

Right, have my dads old Countax ride on mower.

Good news is that after replacing battery terminals and solenoid, it's now starting lovely.

Bad news is that 10 mins later it stumbles and dies, and then won't crank (at all) from the key. Instead i get a rapid clicking from both relays on the PCB - this suggests something shorting when warm - but what?

If I fire the solenoid manually it starts up no problem - so carb, feed line, coil are good...

Problem is i'm struggling to think what it is except maybe something on the PCB - or maybe ign switch?

Appreciate any thoughts!

Greg

Check for any corrosion on the PCB and broken contacts between PCB & relays. There's a fair amount of vibration especially if blades are slightly out of balance so check engine mounts and any earthing points. Is the choke working correctly or the plug fouling.

Thanks, yes there is some corrosion on the pcb - is it just a case of cleaning and refloating or do i need to replace?

I think all the earths are via the loom, but will dbl check connections.

Any theory as to the no crank?

Why would there be relays clicking when trying to restart? Surely the key powers the starter solinoid and that starts the starter?

If only it were that simple... Seat switch, handbrake switch need to be closed to authorise start - hence the relays.
