mobile phone tracking

My unxerstanding was that a mobile phone when switched on would send a signak that is picked up by the nearest masts.

In other words the licatuon if the mobile is known.

Is that correct?

Do mob phone companies log this info, if so, for how long.

Basically is the info. recorded that mob phone xyz was in specific location at a given date and time?

Presumably if the phone made a call, then then lmocation would be recorded, again same questions as above re. Is that info obtainable.

Your mobile talks to the masts so that the mobile operator knows which mast to send an incoming phone call to so it will get to your phone. Normally more than one mast is visible to your phone so by relative signal strengths it is possible to approximate where you are, but it isn't that accurate.

Ok. Thx. So. I am in the right ballpark.

Lets say the area is s.e. birmingham b28. Built up area = lots of peeps = lots of masts.

To what sort of resolution can the location br obtained, 10 m, 50 m, 100 m, 500 m?

Also is this info logged by operator and for how long.

Mast ranges are quite wide so unlikely you get a usable fix
Triangulating would help but 5 masts would be more acurate
Phone companies won't release information, getting it fir Police use is difficult, the intelligence services will obtain more acurate data
Any phone with GPS would be much easier to follow.
If your checking up on someone there are GPS data loggers you can drop in a car or a bag
