Another wasted weekend
Here I am thinking that I don't want to go back to work on Monday and of all the things I've still got to do at home after another wasted
weekend.
First I bought a shower pump - labelled "Used" on Ebay, but described as really being new, but not being boxed. It arrived and was very
obviously used. I thought that at the price, I'd accept that. So spent Saturday running around getting plumbing bits and re-arranging the
pipework to fit it. Connected it in, purged air from the system and switched on - nothing. I'd not been able to test it before fitting as the
manufacturer's instructions specifically warn against running dry for even the shortest time. Fuse had blown, because the impellers were seized
solid! The seller is wriggling, but one way or another, I should get the money back.
Today I thought I'd connect up the phone that my wife got me for Christmas - a proper 1950s dial one. I'd tested it plugged into the
master socket faceplate at Christmas, but found it wouldn't ring when moved to the living room extension. Obviously a wiring fault. So today we
got round to running a new cable in. As it would not pull through, the only way to do it was to remove an 18" section of skirting below the
socket. Doing so broke chunks of plaster from the painted wall New cable in, connected up, phone still didn't ring. Tried again at master
socket, OK. A sudden inspiration and I discovered that plugging in a micro-filter gets it working on the extension, so obviously the ring circuit in
the master socket faceplate is working on its faceplate socket, but not on the associated extension IDC connectors on the back of the faceplate
And to think, I could have spent one of those days freeing off the sticking rear brakes on the kit-car and fitting the new cylinders that I've
got lying around - in the vain hope of some decent weather!

the ring wire from the master is often a major cause of problems with adsl, and should be avoided, however, as you have found, adding a microfilter
locally does reinstated the ring signal.
most modern phones have this circuitry built in.

The ring wire has no effect on ADSL when using a filtered master socket faceplate as it is provided after the filtration, but you are right that it
can make a sometimes significant difference when using an unfiltered master socket and local microfilters.

yep, you are right,, however I think BT engineers generally didn't connect the ring wire when fitting proper filtered masters.
(from a sample of one: they didn't on mine)

Mine is most definitely connected, but just won't work! I shall order a new faceplate and fit that.
