Recommend somewhere to stay in Cambridge
The wife & I are looking at a weekend stay in Cambridge for our anniversary in July.
Can anyone one recommend an affordable hotel or B&B in or within walking distance ?
I took my wife shopping there a couple of years ago & she loved it, just looking at spending the weekend taking it easy, mooching around &
stopping for drinkies here & there.
Cambridge is only half hour away from us so we can get home quick if there's a kiddy emergency whilst the grandparents are looking after
them.
Cheers - Andy

Andy, depends what you mean by walking distance, but there are plenty of guesthouses/B&B's along Chesterton road (I wouldn't go along
it further East than the roundabout with Elizabeth way, as it gets a bit out of the way by then).
Approx a 15-20 minute walk into town, but a nice stroll as half of it is along the river etc. Whenever my parents visited during my student days, they
stayed there - don't remember any specific ones, they're all much of the same. Nothing too fancy but just right for the job.
If you can spend some more money, the Cambridge City Hotel or Royal Cambridge Hotel are better located.
There's also a couple of B&B's near the train station which are not much further in terms of walking distance than Chesterton Road,
but a bit less of a picturesque route...
Parking is always interesting in Cambridge. Near Chesterton road you might be able to get on-street parking that's uncontrolled on the weekend -
check with the B&B's as it's been a few years since I've parked there. In town, there's an NCP right by Cambridge City
Hotel, but not sure how much it costs.
Great place to spend a weekend! Lots of great pubs, and very good shopping.

I've never stayed in a b&b in Cambridge Andy but if you want somewhere close to the city centre check out www.universityrooms.com for rooms
in a college or if you want a pub the Earl of Derby in Hills road not far from the station , within walking distance of the city center . If I manage
to get the spare room decorated I may have a room, I'm about three miles from the centre. Book a punt if the weather is fine ,she'll love
that. The Fitzwilliam museum is well worth a visit has loads of interesting stuff .Mel

Thanks, gives me something to research.
Will definately book a punt, fingers crossed for weather, pub type b&b's are good, we both like that sort of thing.
We are also both happy to walk a fair bit, museum sounds like a good idea too :-)

As mentioned above - car parking in Cambridge is a nightmare so, if you are taking a car, check if the hotel/B&B has parking space. Could you get
there by public transport, seeing as you're so close?
We usually visit the Fitzwilliam Museum when we visit Cambridge and, if you like churches & church architecture, look in the Peterhouse chapel
that's just 100 yards away from the museum, just inside the college gate. It's tiny, but has amazing stained glass and a wonderful
atmosphere (I believe that Peterhouse is the oldest college in Cambridge). It's also free to visit, unlike King's College Chapel, a few
hundred yards up the road. The museum is also free.
Loads of pubs and restaurants, some cheap and cheerful, and some expensive. Loads of shopping opportunities, if you like that sort of thing (I
don't!). It's a small city, so you can cover all of the major parts on foot really easily.
