Excel help (another one!)

I've seen a few Excel assistance threads, so I thought it's time for one of mine!! I have a database query that give me this detail in a spreadsheet;

Date | Change from | Change to
02/04/2015 | <NULL> | New
06/04/2015 | New | Open
14/04/2015 | Open | Closed

And I want to convert it into a table that says;

State | Number of days
New | 4
Open | 8

Any ideas? The number of days is easy (just subtract), but how to get it working with another row, bearing in mind that only rows two and three have an 'output'.

Oh, and these three lines refer to one object out of many, and they will come out of the database in a long list. So I need a formula that can be copied for the entire list.

Thanks!

Sounds like a job for a pivot table
