main dealer servicing

cut a long story short here.

visiting my sister for the weekend, got my dads car as it's far more comfy for the 200 mile round trip than my van!

car was serviced 6-8 weeks ago by ford dealer in loughborough and has hardly been used sinse.

brakes felt a bit spongy ever sinse service but they had changed the brake fluid so dad thought nothing of it.

gets in the car this morning to go to the shops and the brake warning light is flickering, pop the bonnet and the fluid is proper low.

back to my sisters house phones the rac, patrol bloke arrives and finds the o/s/f bleed nipple is finger tight!!!!

i've been a mechanic for 6 years now, worked in some proper dodgy garages and some very nice garages but never ever have i come across anyone who leaves a bleed nipple lose!!!!

we've always serviced our own cars before but with it being fairly new and warranty etc had it done with the main dealer........NEVER EVER AGAIN!!!

We had something similar from one of our local ford dealers.

Bought a S/H ford ka from them as a run around for mum, had it about a week and the brakes felt a bit crap. Stuck it up on ramps, and both back cylinders were leaking enough to make the backplates wet, and both front calipers had half seized up, and two of the pads had pretty much disintegrated. Dads got some pics of it somewhere.

Oh and it passed its MOT and apparently had a full service the weekend we picked it up....

perhaps they were repaired by "technicians" instead of mechanics
the good mechanics at dealers cherry pick all the best earning jobs and leave the routine work for the numpty,s hence the horrendous boo boo,s

Dad certainly had stern words with the guys where we got ours from, and threatened to report them to ford. The manager was a bit of a prat, and tried to tell him that it was fine, and there was no problems with it that would mean it wasnt road worthy. Dad threatened to take the car over to the VoSA inspection station just down the road to get their opinion, infact he got as far as getting in the car and starting it up, before the bloke came over and told him he would get it fixed within an hour.

Sure enough an hour later, and 4 very busy mechanics, it was fixed and has been fine since. But the cars not been back there since, we have done all the work on it ourselves.

Oh, I also know of two people (one ford, other VW/Skoda) who have had their cars serviced and driven halfway home, only to have the oil light come on, then find out they havent filled the engine back up with oil...

I stupidly bought a 2nd hand Forester from a dealer the other year, who announced smugly when I picked the car up that they'd fitted new pads to the front. Just before I sold it last year, I took it to an old school-friends garage for it's MOT, who asked me if it'd had new pads. I told him the above story and he asked me to come and have a look at the front nearside.....

The idiots had only put the caliper on 360 degrees out - i.e. the flexi-hose was twisted!!!!!
Luckily, he did pass it on the understanding that I would sort it out, which I did as soon as I got home. Numpties!!!

I took my Yaris to the local main dealer last year, for a major service and MOT - except they couldn't do the MOT as it was a Saturday...

Anyway, I arranged my own MOT at a friend's testing station, straight after the service - he informed me that there was no evidence that any of the wheels had been taken off!

Passed the MOT anyway, but no thanks to the dealer. And, in case you're wondering, my friend doesn't give my car an easy time - I just know that he will always give a fair test.

and the result of a complaint was.....

service manager couldn't appologise enough

mechanic that serviced (or rather didn't) the car has had a warning over it (i feel a bit bad about that).

car is going in tomorrow and they are gonna check the whole thing over again.

we get a free MOT when it's due in august i believe it is.

still disapointed that it happened in the first place but at least they seem to be willing to make things right and not just fob us off.

John,

Have a good look for spilt brake fluid as any on the bodywork won't do it any good.

A few years ago we were driving back home when everthing cut out - lights engine, the lot.

I figured it was one of the battery leads as car had only been serviced previous day.

Anyway - took car back to dealership and suggested rather forcefully that the service manager go and get a spanner and come out there and then and finish doing it up.

Which he did!!!

looks like the wheel copped most of the fluid but they are supposedly giving it a "full steam clean around the effected arear" so hopefully it'll come back alright.

dad's decided the cars going soon now, only had it a year but i think the couple of problems we've had have took the shine off it for him.

on about looking at a new focus st

John,

Friend had a "proper" test drive in the new ST and thought it was superb.

Only reason he went for it was cos his current ST has flashing dash lights - the cure to which (according to Ford techy chap) was to dim dash lights.

As it happens there are no discounts at mo, so he's been put off slightly.

I had a bit of a battle with Ford with my old Mondeo. Bought it at 2.5 years old from main dealer. Serviced it their to keep warranty OK. At first service they commented on rear bushes being worn, not bad enough to replace, but woyuld check again on next service. Next service came round and they said they had to be changed. It had just gone over 50K miles and they said id have to pay as warranty no longer covered it. Big bill as it needed completed rear subframe. I kicked up a fuss with the dealer principal and they finally replaced FOC. I was amazed that they failed so soon and quoted Fords own OEM warranty saying that they should have been warranted as a manufacturer fault up to at least 100K. I doubt i would have got away with it if i didnt have automotive supplier experience (Iam an automotive parts supplier Project Manager).

I was told by one of the technicians that it was a common known fail point, and occured more in cars used up North. Something to do with worse weather and more salt being used on the roads - sounds like a daft excuse to me.

I have been known to put paint marks on filters etc before servicing so i can check that parts are replaced before.

Ford gave me a crap Fiesta as a courtesy car. Just had my BMW serviced and got a brand new 320D to borrow for the day. The change in service levels was amazing. Only problem this time was that they tried to charge me more than quoted. I queried it and they put the labour rate through on the 4plus scheme which knocked off £60. They also fixed rear wash wipe with no charge. All in id say that BMW's are no more expensive to run the Fords - im well happy so far.

my Z had only done 56k and was due its BIG 60k service

so I booked it in with the company who are supposed to be OH so good and all that crap everyone goes to them

take in mind that My car had never missed a beat

got my car back drove home 200 miles got round the corner and after I found it myself 2 hours later the cam sensor fell of cutting the engine out at 12 at night

trouble is greed there trying to fit to many cars into the day instead of worrying about the customers they already have

I will just service my cars myself in the future new or old infact I wont touch them at all

if it aint broke dont fix it
