Tyre Choice / Recommendations

My wife has just bought my old Pug 106 XSi 1.6 back. The previous owner had fitted a few non-standard parts which she is removing so it is back to the way it was when we last owned it. So the Lexus lights and chrome filler cap have already gone. Next up are the wheels.

It's come back wearing a set of 15" alloys and low profile tyres. Luckily we got the original alloys back (they need a refurb but will be OK) but the tyres are shot.

The standard size for the 106 was 175/60R14's. These are an odd size and only available from a few manufacturers and they command a price premium over 185's at £10 a corner.

So three questions really:-

What would the effect of fitting 185's instead of 175's be on the handling / wheel bearings etc?

Can anyone recommend a good tyre between this lot?

185/60 will have a bigger rolling circumference than 175/60. This means that you will be going faster than the car thinks. Your speedo may read a lower figure than your true speed which is illegal and may cause you to get flashed by a speed camera. 185/55 will be a bit small.

What's wrong with the 15" wheels? you might find a better size match with a low profile 15" tyre.

Try the rallyeregister, they are good guys (well for most of the part) and ar interesteed in going faster rather than rude bodykits and neons.

there is also the peugeot sport forum which is a bit downhill imho and another one which names eludes me - peugeotgti.net or something similar but you have to be a paid member to join iirc i never got in!

ps i still have a set of rallye steel rims with 195/45 tyres but they messed up the speedo/gearing - keeping them as spares as the pcd is same as ford

pps from memory the bridgestone potenza re720 was meant to be the best tyre about last time i looked and the continental premium contact was also highly recommended.

It's got 195/45R15's on it at the minute. They make the ride harsher, it tramlines more and the steering is almost impossibly heavy at parking speeds (no power assist and a 1.6l iron engine).

Added to that the main reason is to get it back to how it looks last time we owned it

if it was my car id just fit 185s. I cant be arsed to (in fact, cant) do the sums, but i doubt the rolling radius is more than a few percent different. Plus, with my little ax, id rather a little more top speed from the bigger tyres, as it runs out of leg before power. Add to that the 10% leeway with cameras/speeding, and i would be satisfied that no more points than normal would be aquired.

185/60/14's would be just under 4cm difference on the rolling radius which would make your speedo read slow by 2.1%

Try some 165/65s instead. You won't notice the difference in width and they are cheaper

I went for Toyo's in the end, at 185 / 60 / 14's.

Been fine so far, apart from the fact that they rub on the inner arches on full lock! Mind you with 185's on, a cast iron 1.6 engine over the front end and no power steering I can never really be arsed to even come close to full lock!
