I'll rip his gonads off if I find him
I am being bombarded by virus laden emails at the moment, got another a minute ago, from th.v.d.gronde@hccnet.nl .
I have decent virus software, but the screen warnings come up every few minutes with another attack, but only when I am online. Offline, there is no
problem and the antivirus software gives my drive a clean bill of health.
Anyone else having a problem? Whats the best course of action?

I had the same problem recently, after speaking to my local ISP chaps (small local business) they reconed there was little u could do but keep your
virus software up to date, that's all they were doing as well.

Surely as I have the nasty little runt email address, can't I tell the dutch police so they can go round his house and shoot him or something?

I recently had the same problem following an e-bay purchase. The virus spoofed addresses and sent me multiple messages cleaned by my antivirus
software. Try www.antivirus.com to find out more about the particular virus and see if they can help

Ditto re Ebay! We've been getting 10 plus a day up until recently.Thankfully now stopped. No doubt all started by some spotty teenage runt whose
best friend is his right hand.

The e-mail address you have will just be someone else in the chain, I've had people write to me saying I sent them a virus but I've got
four anti virus programmes running (it's a long story).
Just keep 'em up to date, thats all you can do.
Cheers
Chris
Note to all: I really don't know when to leave well alone. I tried to get clever with the mods, then when they gave me a lifeline to see the
error of my ways, I tried to incite more trouble via u2u. So now I'm banned, never to return again. They should have done it years ago!

I kept getting messages popping up all the time when i was online, i don't think it was an email, it was another machine trying to log into mine
over the net. It was happening evrytime i dialed up, so it must have been automated, rather than a sad little geek somewhere. In the end i
enabled the firewall protection within XP and it all stopped.

when i first got broadband at home I had no end of virus atacks. You dont have to download anything - the attacks save stuff on your PC and install
themselves. Someone I work with also had his PC shagged within a month of buying it due to self installing probe attacks.
I have norton antivirus. No problems at all now.

For anyone connecting to the net I would recommend getting yourself some firewall software - especially if you're broadband. Its not expensive,
and quite simple to setup.
When you first set it up, the firewall will alert you to any incoming or outgoing requests which you can allow or deny. You'll be surprised by
the number of apps on your machine that tries to connect to the net, and how frequently! But you'll be bloomin shocked by the amount of incoming
attacks you get from random places!!
As chrisg says, the poor blighter whose email address your attacks seem to be coming from will no doubt be the virus's previous victim.

I forgot to say that I have a hardware firewall in the router to my two computers.
In reality its this that stopped the larger proportion of attacks. When my kids play online games, and need to set up a server, we have to make a
'hole' in the firewall to allow their mates to connect. If its left open for any period of time, the attacks begin again......

Yeah, broadband is a bugger for that. My wife (bless her) is an internet junkie by job, and we got "attacked" which norton's
stopped. Nortons gave us the I.P address of the attacker and we were able to track the fucker down. My missus then sent the prick a Winnuke which gave
the SOB a Blue screen of Death! along with the message "piss off" now anyone who attacks my pc gets the same treatment. Its untraceable
and doesn't do any lasting damage to their pc, but its great fun knowing you've screwed them over!

Problem is that it's likely not the attacker that's the victim of your attack.

But as quoted above, you are only attacking the last victim! Not the originator of the attack.
So not only is the poor sod sending out virus's unbeknown he is also being attacked by you!

I ws refering to people who deliberatly hack into your computer, constantly. When we first got broadband, we put norton internet security on, and in
the first day we had over 20 or so attacks, with each one having an alert pop up box. Get's on your nerves after a while.
One nob broke through our firewall and set up a virus in our email, which then sent itself out to everyone in our address book. Within 2 minutes of
the emails going out, we had reply's from all the mail servers telling us we had a virus and returned the mail.
The people who have the virus will know, the problem they face is how do you get rid of it.
Kazaa is a good source for firewall software, for free. But you didn't hear that from me

Another lovely bit of software is called "I hate spam" also available on Kazaa. This run's in Microsoft outlook and allows you to
"bounce" emails back to the origonator (Is that a word?) You can also blacklist email addresses and outlook will delete the message
without you even knowing about it.
Great to get rid of those annoying porn emails that bombard you all the time. Well they bombard me!
If anyone wants a copy download it from kazaa or something, and I can email you the crack.
Mrs Kiwi just pointed out that another good one is Spybot - search and destroy, gets rid of all the nasty ads and spyware that attachess itself to
your registry when your browsing (hu?) get it from www.download.com its free and its GOOD (according to her) don't bother with Adaware, its
crap.
Phew!
Hope this helps!

its a fileshare program, allows you to share files, like songs - pictures - anything! www.kazaalite.com, works better if you have broadband. otherwise
it takes a while to download anything.
If you want any of the above programs I can stick em on a cd and post them to you

For free and excellent Firewall software download Zonealarm.
I've got it on a couple of machines and it's worrying how many attacks you get.
You can test your level of security will Shields Up a very cool program from
www.grc.com . Will give you info on what you need to do to help protect yourself.
There's a great article on there about how they themselves were attacked (although unfortunately it's written in quite a sensationalist
manner) by some 13 year old Script Kiddie and how they tracked down who it was and how he was doing it- zombie masters, zombies and rogue bots!
Ah, if only I knew what I was talking about I could get a real job!
Cheers,
James

tell me about it!
I spent two years studying hard (drinking large quantities of lager is really difficult!) to earn my hnd, to have some deskjocky internet junkie to
jump into a job and earn twice my pay!
Still, I get to play with bomb's and guns. Thats job satisfaction.

Spybot and Adaware
These are both free and do similar jobs finding and isolating trojans etc. If one doesn't find something the other usually does. Careful if you
are using it to check registry entries.

Don't forget to update Adaware and Spybot as they expand and bring out new additions to their database. They do find a lot of tracker cookies
after connection to the web. They do a good job for free software. I tried zonealarm but it detects stuff like cookies and treats them as threats
which is a pain as I have my security set low. I also use adshield but this is only like a blocker for onscreen ads but it does speed up page loading
times .

I was recommeneded to SpamNet - from Cloudmark to get rid of Spam, excellent and free, has got 100% of Spams so far.
As for free firewall software I use Outpost, again free and has stopped the annoying Windows Messenger pop-ups.
Norton has succesfully caught about 2 virus ridden emails a day as well.
Kazaalite, now there's a top piece of software, though I don't use it for software downloads, mostly music and other unmentionable
things.
Broadband has definitely made my machine more vunerable.
