Just a quick question?? How much play should there be in the input and output shafts of a type 9??

I picked one up a while ago pretty cheap but there seems to be play in both the input and output shafts...

Cheers

yep, bog std hammerite, silver and deep green (BRG). couple of coats of both, and it comes up a treat, the hardest part is cleaning up the gearbox before painting, lots of ground on dirt very hard to get off, but look at the result

just measured, output shaft has 10mm play in it, and the input shaft had about 40mm of splined shaft before you hit the clutch leaver, hope this helps

ATB Alex

now im going back to the garage cuz i just noticed i've missed a bit

I'd just check that the small hole in the dome on the gearbox cover isn't blocked as this is the breather.

If this is blocked then the seals will have a hard time due to the gearbox becoming pressurised when it warms up.

Cheers,

Colin
