got to be the new toyota corolla, had one as a rental on the company a few months ago and it was absolutely awesome! mind you why dont you just go and test drive them all

if you want style go for the golf (mk5, i assume) they are great cars, make sure its the GTI tho

if you want to get the wee taken out of you go for the skoda

IMHO

corolla- compromise between style and fuel economy

Octavia - Good car but favoured by taxi drivers and becoming quite a target for theft at the moment I hear.

Focus - Our shopping trolley at the moment although I'm trying to convince her to let me chop it in for a second hand twin turbo S4

Corolla - Best choice if you like tartan rugs and you are both reaching retirement age (although no offence meant if you do actually meet they criteria).

Golf - The new one is supposed to be a very good car compared to the last few models

Beemer - I didn't think I would like it but my mate got one and it's actually really good.

I would probably have to go for the Golf out of that assuming a test drive went well.

ETA: The new Astra is surprisingly good too.

Id go for the new golf myself. The 2.0 tdi is an excellent engine.

The octavia is nice car but as said above theyr taxi's and get broken into.

The focus is a good allrounder and cheaper than the rest. Cheaper to maintain etc.

A couple of people I know have wanted a golf, got one and wanted to get rid of it quick as they were disapointed by them.

My choice would be the octavia but I'm biased as ive got the vrs, or the focus

Focus

We have an estate focus (115TDCi), really nice car to drive, goes like stink, plenty of space, cheap to insure and maintain.

I would go for the Focus, the ST version of course, if I could afford it. But hey, I'm very happy with my car, the rally version of the Vauxhall Astra.

I really rate the mk5 golf, the 140pf td gti is an absolute rocket, the TDI/FSI engine is a great diesel to drive, and the golf freels pretty solid, its nice and wide, and hangs on pretty well.

The base model interior lets it down a bit, but most of them come with a reasonable interior.

The TDI 4motion would make a great tow car in my opinion.

Octavias are pretty nice too, same same but different really.

Liam

I've had the Bora 1.9 Tdi Sport (130) for 3 years (getting a new A4 Quattro next week ). It's been a fantastic and ultrareliable car and tows really well. I'd definitely go for the Golf!

If your considering the Golf why not look at the Seat?

Golf floor pan and running gear
Golf engine
Audi interior
Much cheaper

Had a Leon for 4 years from new no problems.
Would buy another tomorrow.

Im on my second Octavia Estate. Most reliable cars i've ever had (and i've owned a lot over last 30yrs).
The latest is 130bhp elegance model, fast and frugal (regular 50mpg).
Skoda are no longer the butt of jokes, except for the uneducated.

Out of the lot - the Skoda holds it's price better is better built than any of the Jap cars. More reliable than the BMW's or VW's.

I've had a Skoda VRS, now a 140bhp 2.0TDi. It goes like tihs off a shovel. Only the immature or uneducated have a dig... never had a dig in the last year as I'm the one laughing! It's spec'd up to the eyeballs with dual climate control, parking sensors, LED's etc etc etc

Regularly achieve between 48~52 real mpg's - real world driving.

Steve

I'm with BKLOCO on this one, the SEAT Leon is a cracking car and top value for money too. TDI 150 is my choice - fast, frugal and fun and IMHO better looking than the other cars mentioned, particularly the golf mk5 which I think is the dullest looking model they've managed to date.

Hi

I got a new shape Octavia in Nov 05 as my company car. It has since travelled about 32000 kms (20000 miles) since then. Have had some problems but on the whole a great car. Doesn't handle as well as my last Mondeo but VERY comfortable. I suppose it's worth mentioning that after 3 days, the gearbox jammed in 5th and had to be replaced. The airbag warning light came on after about 2 months and had to get an ignitor replaced. I ran it into (and wrote off) a Transit van about 2 months ago. €11000 later and I'm back on the road as good as new.

Seriously tho, a great car that works hard for a living. Mine is the 105BHP Tdi. Couldn't recomment it enough. Have managed 62 MPG on occasion with a VERY light right foot. Ususally around or above 55 mpg but rarely below.
