i need a new computer!
this one is pretty much what i need as far as i can tell, ie right sort of use. Can anyone see anything obviously flawed with this one? Suggest any
better suppliers? Ive checked a few others but the price seems good.

it looks pretty good, the only things i would change is the XP home to pro, thats just because i prefer pro, the home edition is ok. and maybe
increase the RAM, but it depends what use the comp is for, for normal use thats fine. if its for computers games or any high mem usage then u will
prob want to upgrade.
It looks to be a reasonable deal, especially with a 17 inch monitor!

Check Dell out as well, great prices and their service is superb. I call up their techy support about 3 weeks ago becasue a laptop I had from them 3
years ago (on a one year warranty!) kept crashing. They answered the phone straight away, the Irish chap was extremely knowledgable and helpful, and
even offered to call me back in a week to make sure everything was still ok. Now that's what I call service. And Compaq from wot I've
heard have a bad repuatition for service....

Try Dell outlet (off the main website) They have some good bargains on machines that were ordered and canelled so usually someone has already taken a
hit on the memory upgrade etc.. And yes I can vouch for how bad Compaq service is, it's all Hp's fault, they sacked all the UK staff and
offshored them...

Dell are a good place, my housemate has had a laptop for 2 years now from them and it still working well, like people say they have good service and
if ur lucky they often have offers, such as double memory at no extra cost.
EDIT works 8 is aload of rubbish, u will want office if u want to do any speadsheet or document work. altough if u don't want to pay for it i
believe open office is a good altenative, it is basically the same as word etc and will open microsoft word files and save to them too. I have a copy
of office from uni so i don't know much more than that about it, but my housemate does use it so will ask him about it when he turns up if u
like?

I wouldn't buy from PC world tbh, few mates work there.
Components are cheapest possible and are pretty shite realy.
Dell is a far better bet and probably cheaper too. Or get someone to build one for you, that way you can build to exactly what you want/need.

Dell turn out some shite too though - at least with a Compaq you know its made by HP. Fujitsu Siemens are good.

I bought the same computer about 3 weeks ago, been using it about 10 days now. Seems ok so far. Most annoying thing is that its faster, got more
memory, got more RAM, more connectors, comes with a flatter screen and takes up less space than the computer I bought five years ago at three times
the money. I guess that's what they call progress.

I would avoid HP and/or Compaq... nothing wrong as far as reliability goes. But if you need to upgrade you're pretty much shafted as most
components are specific to this make.
I have a Dell laptop; as well as my home built 57 variety; and it's super spec and reliable.

thats true, HP is a very good make but they do charge for it. printers are a good example new cartridges can be very expensive, i remember once we had
a printer that cost £30 and a new cartridge was almost that much!

Hi Joel
I would avoid PC world their backup is cr*p. have you seen the queues of people on a saturday for the service department?
Dell may not make the most sparkling performing computers but thier customer service is about the best.
Better than that build your own - you can hold it together with cable ties like you do with your car
Cheers

When my old computer broke down they sent an engineer out the next day and fixed it no trouble.

I've got a lot of HP/Compaq PCs in my training centre and it was true that Compaq used to mod hardware to make them specific to their PCs. Now
though they just sell branded desktop clones like everyone else.
Personally I've always built my own and for most people I deal with! Including Omex who supplied my electronics, Mech Repairs who do my rolling
road work and even RAW after I bought my kit car from them
Anyway yep I would never claim to be able to compare on cost to a mass produced bundle. I prefer to produce a system matched to the users
requirements/budget while cutting out all the fluff which gets bundled with shop bought systems.
The other appeal of a custom system is running factory crippled hardware back to the full potential. This maybe re-flashing a graphics card to
re-enable memory bandwidth or more usually running a cheaper processor at premium processor speeds.

I don't know what is available in the UK I agree with the need for XP Pro and would double both the memory and hard drive size.

since you're only in leeds, try CCL in Tong. they built us a pc to better spec than a dell one from an ad in the paper, and was at least £100
cheaper (though it was about an £800 package, a couple of years ago).
good phone back up when stuff's gone wrong, or for upgrading. they're real people that you can stand infront of to talk to, which was a
big plus for me.

if u can afford it i would deffo get a mac, alot of my lecturers have them, they are really good machines. but u do pay for it tho! double mem would
be very useful as nowadays u really need a gig of ram.
hard drive space is not as important, the more the better, but it depends on what u need, i only have 30 gig but would like more, don't need it
just yet as my housemate has over 800 gig and is connected via a router so i can use all his media, if u do want to have media on ur comp, music,
films tv series then u will deffo want to double the hard drive! it will get used up very quickly!
it takes me back to our first comp when my dad got a comp that didn't even have a hard drive! u booted it off one of those huge floppies that
atcually are floppy!
