Trouble with engine check light

Wife has a 2000 VW lupo and the engine check light has come on. Its the one in the shape of the engine. Trouble is we had the AA man out to read the fault code but he failed. Apparently there are some 2000 VW's that they have wired wrong and cant be read by the regular fault code readers. Only the dealer can do it. Seems rather unfair? Are there any adaptors that correct it, or can the codes be read another way?

Thanks
Adrian

mhh

thats almost what every man says when he fails to read out some codes.

i would just go to the dealer and test if it works.

if that light comes on there is something bad

when still using the car you ruin your labda sondes and they will cost silly money!
also your cat can suffer allot from driveing with that light on.

Tks

i think it was in 2000 that all manufacturers started to use a standard diagnostic plug to allow code readers access but not all makers played ball and wired their plugs up differently stopping access from non-dealer diagnostic machines. there are plenty of mobile specialists who will come to you and tell you what codes are logged most moble blokes charge £30 which is a lot better than main agents

Has it had an aftermarket head unit fitted? Some of the ISO adapters can short out the CAN bus (which is used to program the OEM head unit) and prevent code being read.

Thanks guys,

Its booked into the dealer tomorrow, was hoping there may have been cheat that I could have done to read it or reset it.

Will let you know how the wife gets on tomorrow. Search on google listed it could be, Lamda sensor, cam position sensor, throttle position sensor, misfire... brake pedal switch (but I think thats the other EPC light) and a raft of others...

Thanks
Adrian

apparently a dirty throttle body. Cheaply cleaned at £168. Apparently 2001 legislation made manufacturers open up the codes so any garage/AA man could read them. As its a 2000 only the VW dealer can do so (and I guess a Bosch specialist)

Cheeky dear at the dealer also pointed out it has 76K on the clock and is it not time to buy somehting new!

Thanks
Adrian

hi,

basickly you have just been given the run around even if the tool uesd to read the faults could not get the DTC from the VW application the OBDII app will have been abole to.

the trotle body fault is resnobly common on this engine system.

PS just spent the last 6 mounths of my life wrighting VAG CAN driver softwhere and asosiated stuff.

if any one is in the manchestere area and has a problem of this tip drop me an email as I can look for free.

blake
