converting music on vinyl to Mp3...

Evening folks.

I'm just having a garage clearout, and I have uncovered all my old Vinyl records from when I attempted to become a "mixmaster genius" (to borrow a Kevin a Perry saying!). I have long since given up mixing on record decks, but I quite fancy a go at mixing with Mp3s.

I would like to convert my vinyl music to MP3 anyway, so has anyone ever done this? I don't currently have any decks or mixers etc, just a PC, with a line in connector! Suggestions of a cheap record deck that can be connected up to my PC without needing a mixer would be most appreciated!

Also, software for converting the recorded sound to mp3, and removing hissing, clicks etc? Anyone got any experience of this?

Cheers
Andy

Nero 7 does it nicely - removed hiss, clicks and pops, allows mixing and even output to CD after mixing.

I use a product called Magix Audio Cleaning Lab V 1.0 - interface is a bit clunky, but dead simple to use once you suss it out. Removes crackle, hiss clicks etc cost about tuppence halfpenny off ebay - I'm sure there's a newer version around by now.

I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/furoreproducts/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1

You will still need some kind of pre-amp for the phono cartridge, there are a few amps that still have these otherwise find an old amp and use the tape out for the PC.

Some years ago i was going to set up a business doing this however I could not get a copyright license and as soon as I asked I got a warning letter saying that I would get sued if I ever tried to offer the service even for people's own record collections!!

I don't use a pre-amp, just take the phono output from my record deck & put it straight into the soundcard input - Soundblaster Audigy initially comes out a bit quiet, but the software has a feature called "normalising" which resets the volume to a sort of standard level - works a treat

Maplins do a suitable pre-amp for about 0.1 LCU's

Just dug this up on Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ion-ITT-USB-Turntable-With-USB-I-TT-USB-I-TT-USB_W0QQitemZ120042021832QQihZ002QQcategoryZ48460QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewI tem

Any thoughts? Looks like it might simplify things a little, despite costing a fair bit in the first place. I suppose I could get a portionof that back by selling it on when I have finished with it...

Hmmm

Cheers!
Andy

Don't forget any mechanical noise from the turntable will make it presence known in the recording. If you have a decent turntable already, It'd be better to use that....

I'd use a standard turntable plugged into the phono input on a hifi amp, then take the tape output to the sound card. You could plug the deck straight in to the sound card, but your SNR ratio will be crap and the recordings are likely to be much noisier.

I'd use Sound Forge (by Sonic Foundry) if I were you. It's an expensive package, but it can be found on p2p to 'try it out'.... *cough*

BTW, if you're after doing mixtapes (rather than live mixing) ACID, also by Sonic Foundry, is excellent. Use the beat aware features and you can't go wrong.

And finally, if you're clearing out old records, send me a list! Always after vinyl especially if it's house/funky and cheap!

Unfortunately, I don't have any decks, I sold them to buy a new mountain bike a couple of years ago!

Hmmm decisions decisions, I dont' know whether to pickup a cheap standard turntable, and amplifier etc, or to go for that turntable listed above....

With regard to record lists, then I was planning to sell them on after I have taken a copy, so I shall send you a list chris. Most of the music will be a mixture of house/trance from when I was at University (finished in 2002) So there will probably be something of interest for you.

Cheers
Andy

To be honest, I'd expect the thing on eBay to be crap. For the same money, you could buy an entry level DJ deck - no need for direct drive if you're not mixing - and a reasonable phono stage to interface it with your sound card. Look at Richer Sounds - they have a Gemini on there for £80 and a Cambridge phono stage for £30. It'll sound a lot better....

Or, spend the cash on petrol, come to Bucks, and use my 1210's for the day...

Having said all that, and without stating the obvious, wouldn't it be a lot simpler (and probably quicker) to get a p2p client and download the tracks? I understand it's all above board if you own a copy of the original recording - I believe copyright law allows you to take a single copy for personal archive use as long as you don't distribute the file.

Evening folks...

Stopped off at Maplins ont eh way home from work, and lo and behold, they had one of the Ion USB turntables there. So I bought it! I used one of the discount vouchers too, and got it for £112.99 in the end!

I've opened it up, and it looks pretty good, although I have not connected it up to test just yet, that will have to wait till the weekend!

Cheers

A magnetic phono cartridge requires equalisation to give a flat frequency response (known as RIAA equalisation). without it the sound will be lacking in bass and very tinny due to the bass cut and treble boost that is applied when a record is cut.

Have a look on Ebay, something like this, or this should be fine.

Though of course I should have read to the end of the thread before replying...

Well, it seems to work okay too! okay, the deck might not be the most fully featured in the world (it has no pitch slider, and is fairly lightweight) but so far it is doing a good job of getting my Vinyl tunes onto my computer with minimum faffage!

The sound quailty is okay too, although the cartridge that came with the deck does seem to be a little cheap sounding.

Anyway, I've got a few boxes of records to play/record now, so if anyone is interested in buying the deck to convert their vinyl after I have finished, or is interested in the vinyl I shall be getting rid of in the future, let me know. I am making a list of what I have as I go along

Cheers
Andy

Job Done!

over 175 12" records recorded, and all seem to have gone through fine. The TTion deck has worked a treat, and the sound quality is surprisingly good!

Anyway, the records are all on ebay now, as is the deck. Links here:
