Any of you knowledgeable chaps know where I may be able to download a free/legal (older version, if necessary) of either of above, preferably Powerpoint.

Have you looked at OpenOffice ?

I was going to say OpenOffice too... it has file-compatible equivalents of Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
