VTec in a MX-5 at all??
Guys,
Is there any obvious reason why you can't take something like this:
# 2.4 Honda VTEC engine
# Z Cars Rotrex supercharger kit
# 450 BHP/300LB FT torque
http://www.zcars.org.uk/montecarlo/specifications.htm
And put it in a mk1 MX-5?? These are sooo cheap these days, quite light, handle sooo well and are sooo comfortable for a road car.
By obvious reason I mean the output shaft being somewhere awkward or rotating the wrong direction, mainfold routing impossible and any things like
that. Someone here sucessfully put a V8 in there some I would assume there's enough room
Cheers,
Alex

MX-5?? thats a girls car.
Going by the wobbly nature of these cars (I've unfortunately been in a few) not my first choice for a 450bhp engine...

You start that all again? How about a big sticker with the BHP figure?
Seriously now, actually one of the things I like about this car is that nobody looks at you when you drive it and yet it's a very very enjoyable
ride, trust me Or trust Top Gear if you like, the review for the mk3 touches the previous ones too, and you can find it on youtube

Alex

Why not just leave it in the s2000 and buy one of them? I'd of thought by the time you've bought a donor car, engine and sorted the ecu
and gubbons to get it up and running it won't be much cheaper than buying an older s2000 complete?
Chris Mason fitted an s2000 engine in an indy and iirc recon'd it owed him best part of 7or 8k to get running, add a couple of grand for a
decent donor and you can't be far off the price of a second hand s2000 surely?
Ned.
beware, I've got yellow skin

"One of the best handling cars ever made" and stuff like that I seem to remember.. I reckon a project like what I'm saying could
easily do a late 911 Carrera.. and on the track.

that wasn't the same program that claimed a Rolls Royce could be run on the same money as an Escort, was it...
and claimed the Nissan Bluebird was the best car Britain had produced and then in another episode claimed it was the worst!

Hmmm - in the interest of balance....
I used to own a Mk1 Eunos Roadster and it was a superb car to learn how to handle/enjoy RWD. My slightly modified (suspension mostly) version just
about hung on to my best mates Elise on the road. To be honest, if you don't like the way they feel, then I have to question what you look for
in a drivers car. Having said that, aren't you putting Lambo wheels on a MK?
Also, I am sat in work with a pink shirt on - and I'm very comfortable in my heterosexuality thanks.

You certainly have a point. The S2000 as such is an expensive car though, and we are talking about something in the region of 200 bhp, so a good
preparation needs to be thrown in?

And how about the inline 6 M3 engine? I quite fancy some silly motor inside that car and that engine is about 280 or 320 bhp depending on version?

I put the V8 in an mx5 - back in 1999.
Re: the chassis - I made a small triangulated subframe to go under the transmission tunnel - made my car noticeably stiffer than stock. taking out the
PPF meant I needed gearbox mount, diff torque reaction mount. There's a (poor) pic on my website. With koni shocks & stock springs
it's an excellent ride (do your own jokes ;^)

Hear Hear!
My wife's fun car is a 1.8 Mk1 Eunos S-Special. Lowered, bilsteins all round with a torsen LSD.
I actually prefered driving it to my evo as you could have far more fun without worrying about speed. It may not be the quickest but the handling and
fun is second to none. If the ones you drove were wobbly then I either have to question your driving or the setup of the car.
A properly alligned MX5 is very neutral and is easy to provoke controllable oversteer.
Anyone suggesting the little 5 is a hairdresser/girls car needs to drive a properly setup one

Hi Bob,
Was it a Rover or a GM?

Rover - 3.5 at first then 4.6....
I think you'd struggle to get a straight 6 in, a V6 should go (though many have oiling issues 'cos they are tilted over a lot in the FWD
original - one of the alpha engines would be nice...mmmm
Easiest though is to slap a damn big turbo on the original 1.6 engine - folk were getting up to 300ponies out of that - there are a few UK experts but
FM in USA are the daddies

Funny you should mention that.... I was thinking last only last night that an MX 5 with an Alfa V6 and one of those Italiano (I think thats the name
of it) body conversion kits would be a pretty cool car. I discounted the idea at almost exactly the same time I started estimating just how much it
would cost to do however

That's all interesting stuff
The 4.6 litre was about 225 bhp?
Cheers,
