Any BMW experts out there ?

2nd hand info, not seen the car yet but my son been on phone and describes the following........

"big puff of smoke"

He as seen this about 3 times, different driving conditions each time, just described as a " large puff of smoke" car is running fine, no loss of power, no pumping up of water hoses, no loss of fluids.......temperatures normal......

E46 325 2.5 24v M54 engine on a W plate.

Anything I should be looking at, any ideas ?

I think at that age it may be the engine with Nikasil coating on the bores, lots of trouble with the coating being erroded with unleaded fuel, all going well then suddenly clouds of smoke as the engine fails.

BMW used to cover this under warranty but at that age its all history....

Its not an uncommon problem, early V8 jags had the same thing, you look on ebay lots have new factory engines at some point.

Hope it does not apply to your son.

Regards Mark

Is it high mileage, there is a known problem with Bmw's chewing up bores, something to do with sulphur in the fuel?

I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/furoreproducts/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1

I had one of those 2.5 BMWs which was fixed under warranty by BMW, car was 5 years old with 80,000 miles!

I thought the problem had been solved by about 1998 and they had used a new lining finish. I had no smoke, used very little oil but the idle had become slightly rough (most people would not notice). I might be wrong but I would have thought the car was built when the problem had been fixed, and would have thought the smoking would have been all the time. I would have thought it might be a problem with the breather system perhaps...

If out of the exhaust then I would suspect Bore wear. BMW had serious problems with the old Nikasil linings. Still not convinced they can produce a reliable Alusil engine, either.

Lack of sulphur which is why the problem was bigger in the US...sulphur was acting as a lubricant...take it away and the nikasil bores wore away faster...

As the car should still be under warranty, I'd get it into the local dealership. If not, then steer well clear and use a specialist.
