Household plumbing - hot water prob:)
Chaps,
If we have our hot water on (via boiler), we get no hot water. If heating is on (and boiler on, as in house cold enough), we get hot water. Immersion
works fine.
My first point (and cheapest) is tank stat. Trouble is, I went to replace, and the wiring diagram has 2 wires (3 for Y-plan?). I removed cover to old
tank stat (at least 17 years old) and it had 4 wires.
New one is earthed (I guess) through hot water tank, old is earthed with g/y stripey wire. That leaves another wire?
Any suggestions please.
Thanks
Simon

Could well be a sticking motorised valve, depending on your system you may have just one or there may be two.
If you can see the valve, try turning the tank stat on and off (you should hear it clicking), and as it does, see if the lever on the motorised valve
moves, or you may hear the valve moving.
Because of the magnetic field of the motor, they attract iron particles into the gubbins of the valve, which then causes them to stick.

If the manual lever works the valve then it will be the little stepper motor that has gone.
If its a Honeywell or Danfoss they sell just the motors for around £15 in B&Q or to replace the whole valve is about £40
Both quite simple jobs.
Its unlikely to be the cylinder stat if the valve itself is powered up or if power is present at both sides of the switch when it is calling for heat.
The cylinder stat if old could also be a double pole switch.. that might explain the 4 wires.

Cheers chaps - I'll have a look at the motorised valves tomorrow (there's two).
Thanks again.
