BMW Diesel woes and realoem.com
Ive got an interesting fault happening with my 2002 320D SE Tourer.
Car has done 70K miles. Full dealer history. Sadly no warranty left. Absolutely brilliant car, i love it to bits.
Most of the time it goes like it should for a 150bhp model. However every now and again it feels like the Turbo isnt spinning up. Acceleration is
really sluggish. I reluctantly mention turbo at this stage as i believe the turbo itself is good, that is just what it feels like.
Had a look under bonnet the other day, its a maze of wires etc. Only thing i did notice was that a large pipe feeding the inlet manifold had a sensor
screwed into it that was a bit oily. Ive cleaned it - didnt make any difference to the running but may indicate another bit that might have to be
looked at.
Any ideas?
Has it happened to anyone else?
Any good BMW forums to search?
Cheers,
Darren.

I reckon these have a variable geometry turbo and the mechanism is prone to stick sometimes, I am sure there are probably other possibilitys
aswell.

When did you last change the fuel filter ?
Can give intermitent problems with a dirty filter (just had the same symptons on a Golf turbo).

www.tyresmoke.net has a BMW section - you could try there.
I'm considering one of these when I change my car in late July. Either the saloon or estate, gotta be the 150bhp as it can be remapped to
200bhp and about 325ft/lb for about £200
Apparently the clutch etc is all good for it and should put the torque down better being RWD than my remapped A4 TDI did.
Out of interest what kind of MPG do you see with it?
As for your problem I too have heard about VNT turbos sticking, they get a fair bit of cooking.

Ill try the forums. Thanks for the links.
Hobbsy - on a good run driving steady (for work so no need to rush) i can get high 50's showing on the computer (ie between 70 and 75). Driving
at 80 ish sees low to mid 50's. Round the doors about 45 ish. It is fantastic on fuel for a relatively big ish car.

Its a common fault with the 330d, and could be problem with the 320d, if you chip, remap etc watch for diesel leaks,I had both problems on my330d.

Oh boy - i have a terrible admission to make - no idea what the AFM would look like or how to test it. I have heard they sometimes need cleaning? Is
that right? Is the AFM and MAF the same thing. Apparently on the BMW if you replace a MAF it has to be re-programmed.
Ive only took the engine cover off once and its all a bit alien in there at the moment. I dont suppose anyone has a link to a pic do they?
Ive posted on bmwland as well. A quick search and they talk about turbo actuator arms, vacuum pipes, MAF and all sorts of things. I need to get up to
speed quickly on all of these things.
Cheers,
Darren.

The instances when my VAG tdi has had performance issues it's been one of two things, boost pipe come off or ecu gone into get me home mode.
I've thankfully not had any airbox sensor related probs, but sounds like a sensor fault given the intermittant nature of the fault you
describe.
Ned.

Dont know about cleaning but I belive it works by heating a wire and then measuring the resistance.
the theory is that the more flow of air passed the heated wire the will cause more of less resistance.
PS the wire is hidden in the unit IIRC
