God Bless insurance companies
So my wife had her car backed into at speed by a neighbour in her 4 x 4 - no suprise there....
The loss assesor comes round to look at the damage - very nice chap too.....
Call me the next day and the conversation goes something like this:
'So Mr Pearson, the car is beyong economical repair. What do you recon the car is worth?'
'About £950-£1050', say I, after a trawl around Autotrader.
'Well I think it is worth more like £1200' says he, 'So if we take off the salvage value of £200 are you happy if I send you a
cheque for £1000 and you keep the car'
'Very happy' say I
The car is a 1998 Peugeot 406 that I bought off a mate 18 months ago for £800. The damage is a hole in the bumper directly through the now broken
number plate - cost to repair £8 for a new number plate to cover the hole, and a creased bonnet - £50 + vat from my local scrappers.
So that's rather made my day, and my wifes, who now has £1800 to spend on another car (if I can sell this one for £800 which should be a
problem, it's a very nice car )
Oh yes, and it's free Ben and Jerry's day today - and there's one opposite my shop

but don't they claw back the money with increased premiums as you had to make a claim even though it was not your fault?

The only issue is the car has a Cat C write off on HPI unless you can prove repairs are sound, possibly an "engineer's report" at
about £150 you may have trouble next time you try and insure it, as soon as you cash the cheque the current insurance is finished i.e. null and
void!

how do you work that out ?
even if its a "Cat C" so what, its an un economical repair, not a write off, two tottally seperate issue's
my 2004 rover 75 tourer was bought, from an insurance company, with the whole left hand side taken off, ie front bumper, front wing 2 doors and
scrapes to the rear wing and bumper, yet its not marked as anything, no a b c or d, and all because it was "an unecnomic repair"
It also sailed thru its first an only MOT 3 weeks ago, and does not show anything un toward on the dVLA system, and does NOT requier any engineers
report
Jasper's car will be no different
regards
steve

This was on the third party's insurance, not ours, so not problem with premiums or anything else, and it's not being written off -
they're just giving us the £££ in lue or repairs....
