Having lived out there its generally the maids brother who does your garden for you.....stealing you blind as he goes....four lawn mowers in one season........ ps they will take the laptop as well.

The camera wont be the issue its finding a way to get the signal into the laptop, with pc based camera systems you normally need to use a dvr card, this should allow you to connect up pretty much any camera, HTH
Mac

JUST down loaded a trial version of
i-Catcher lets you use a web cam.

runs all the time but only records movement

tried it for 5 Min's seems to work fine.
http://www.icode.co.uk

and as for what mangogrooveworkshop
said think you could be right about the laptop but will try anyway ,
been thinking about ways to stop them
not thought of anything yet,

Two or three things will do the trick.....
Get a Sangoma to curse the yard......
And put bad muti in view from the gates ect.

then you need a pack of dogs

And last of all you require MR SMITH AND MR WESSONS FINEST PRODUCT

THEN IT GETS SILLY....XPANDA WAS THE PLACE

TO CONVERT YOUR ENTIRE HOUSE TO A JAIL...

http://www.xpanda.co.za/htm2/multiguard.htm

I worked for these lads in the JHB area and the bars got thicker the walls higher.
Electric fencing installers had to do illegal mods ....to over come the locals magic carpet trick
Electrified razor wire is defeated by throwing carpet over it.....Simply modification to the legal unit by stepping up the current and voltage rendered this trick void unknown the the nice redistribution of wealth squad.... I will let you imagine why....

Double van hijacks within three weeks started me thinking........

The tipping point was when my wife was held up at work and shot at point blank......the gun jammed.
Game set match, I upsticks right there and then.
Never looked back..yes we had the sun and the sea and the cash......but life is more important than that.

The quality of the standard camera isn't great but it works well enough in daylight, I can can also give you a link to free software that allows remote monitoring of it.
