OT...Defender issues...turbo rebuild?

Im trying to figure out whats wrong with my sisters 300TDI defender...

It suddenly decided to drop a load of coolant and spray engine oil all over the front nearside side of the bonnet area...

Its now refusing to start...It will run fine if you short out the starter solonoid and start it that way....it does smoke like a bitch now though. I cant figure out if the oil and non start issue are related...they both happened at the same time!

One of the possibilities is that the turbo has given up which would explain the oil spray and the coolant leak due to overheating....

Is it possible to get a DIY rebuild kit for the turbo or is it best to just replace the entire thing with an exchange unit?

Any other possible causes?

search on here for turbo rebuild or similar.

pretty sure there was a write up about taking one apart and rebuilding it, I didn't pay much attention as mine is a v8.

disconnect the 3" turbo pipe on the manifold, so it becomes just a N/Aspirated diesel, see if it still smokes a lot. It could also be the oil check (breather) valve on the side of the head, again disconnect the 1" pipe from it to the inlet (nr air filter), and see if that stops the smoke.

If its not those, then could be a head gasket blown. Not sure on the 300tdi, but the 200 tdi (mine) was a common occurrence, as it blew between the pushrod hole and the cylinder, alowing oil to be sucked into the cylinder.

But thats usually the no3/4 pots not at the front. mine has been OK since.

300 tdi's are also very common for blowing head gaskets and warping heads in a big way the gasket between the thermostat housing and cylinder block also leak badly but that wouldn't explain oil
