Exploding battery!
hmmm, sat at my desk for five mins at work having a sandwich and we heard a loud crack, like an exploding capacitor noise.
opened my colleagues drawer to find an AA battery looking very sorry for itself and leaking everywhere with one end blown out (duracell procell
one)
It was sat in a cool wooden desk drawer with no conductive bits nearby, why the hell did it suddenly and randomly explode??

Maybe your colleague is planning a prank involving exploding batteries and wanted to try one out

Maybe it was just tired of life, the monotonous drudgery of making small and pointless electrical items work for a brief while before being cast away
without a second thought sounds a pretty miserable existence to me.
I had a flash gun commit hara-kiri today, the big discharge cap blew itself up with a loud pop and a big cloud of smoke. I could probably have fixed
it if the staff around at the time hadn't unleashed a fire extingisher at it
