Got bored today so.....

..... I made a gallon of mead

Nice and simple to make.
3lb of honey dissolved thoroughly into three quarters of a gallon of water.
Pop a sliced orange and some sultanas into the demijohn.
Pour in the honey water.
Add yeast and shake vigorously for 5 mines to well oxygenate the water.
Top up with a little more water.
Stuff in a bung and air lock.
Shake vigorously twice a day for the first 3 days to give the yeast plenty of oxygen.
Leave alone for 6-8 months!

Also knocked up 5 gallons of Porter Ale

Should be ready in a month

Ben

Mead will get you out of your tree in no time!
What is porter?
In the old days it was a nice word for slops (spillage) from the pump trays, all mixed together (bitter, mild etc.). People who were too poor to buy beer pulled from the pump used to drink it.

Strong dark hoppy ale

Gonna raid the local car boots etc soon for more demijohns and get a load of stuff brewed up
Apple wine next I think as we have about 10 apple trees in the garden.

used to make industrial quantities of cider in Saudi, very very naughty stuff, just apple juice, chopped apples and bakers yeast then cleared it with raisins, usually took a couple of months to get a good 5 gallon plastic container ready for a party.

Last mead I had was some Russian stuff my dad brought back with him when he was last working out there. Nice stuff, but no-one else liked it, so I ended up drinking 8 pints of the stuff! I could barely see the next day!

Yeah I might have to siphon a bit off.
Tis my first time making mead, and from what I read it ferments alot slower than beer etc.

i've got 8 demijohns sat in the front room waiting to make mead in my student house next year

might start it before we move in but we're gonna have some wild parties at christmas!
most of the online sources i've found say it should be good to go in about 3 months after fermentation's stopped. should take about a fortnight to ferment.

incidentally, where are you getting your honey from? asda seems to be about the cheapest i've found so far. about £4 for 3lbs

i have plans vague plans for crunchy nut cornflake wine too. the guy i got the demijohns off says it's really nice.

so how do you do the cider then? I love the stuff (hate beer) and haven't found any "brew your own" stuff.

I just went for sainsburys pure honey, think it was around a fiver for the 3 jars I needed.

Yeah i've read you can drink it after fermentation, but it's meant to get much better the more you age it.

Crunch nut cornflake wine sounds interesting!

Got plenty of fruit grows in our garden and field so i'm gonna make lots of different types this year
