sky+ need dvd recorder

hi all
i need to by a dvd recorder as my sky+ box has no free space the missus keeps using it up.

my questions are do i but one also with a hard drive (ie dvd recorder and hdd together)that way i would have more space and im guessing easyier to copy.

im not really sure if this idea would work with sky plus.

any info would be a great help.

thanks simon

I use a samsung DVD recorder ( r120 I think). I don't think it will make it any easier using one with a built in HDD. Waste of money IMHO if you have an HD in the Sky+. Its easy to dub stuff over using the copy function. Just make sure you use video mode if you want to play it on other DVD players.

I have a HDD/DVD recorder with analogue tuner and it is connected to a freeview box by scart. I can record from the box by setting it to record from the scart connection to the HDD or DVD and would think you could do the same with your Sky if you programme the box or leave it on the channel you want to record from. I can also transfer from HDD to DVD in the recorder but the edit functions on mine are very basic.

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Why not put a bigger disk in the sky+? 250gb will give you loads more hours.

Or get another Sky+ box and go multi room, they are only £100 at the moment so much cheaper than a dvd recorder.

It all depends what sky+ you have.

If it's a PVR2 model with a 40gb drive then you can put a 250gb hdd into it and you will be able to use all the 250gb.

If it's a PVR3 which allows the ANYTIME service then you have a 160gb hdd but 80gb of that is reserved for anytime leaving you with 80gb.

So even if you upgrade the 160gb to a 250gb the operating system will snatch 80gb away immediately leaving you with 170gb. You can turn the anytime feature off but it does'nt give you the space back.

Have a look HERE to see what sky+ you have.

What channels are mostly recorded? If they are from the freeview list then you have other options.

Personally I use a networked TIVO. I can then drag recordings I want to keep off the tivo onto my pc upstairs - cut out the breaks if there are any and then burn them off.
