OT...Legality of charging patrons for access?
Im getting fairly sick of this and was wondering if it was legal for them to be doing it...(against liscensing or somesuch)...
Basically, we only have 1 drinking establishment in the local town that stays open until 3:00...Its nothing more than a room with a bar, some chairs
and some shite music....
They have recently started charging for entry but the fee varies depending on who you are or the day you go...anything from £1.50 to £4....
Its pissing me off that they are charging an arm and a leg to go inside and buy seriously overpriced drinks and listen to shite music...
I have to say I have voted with my feet and simply dont go there very often...
But is what they are doing legal?....At the very least should they not be displaying the terms of entry and any fees that are payable clearly on the
gate?

(from what i've experienced in coventry and wigan - its entirely up to the owner of the bar).

i reckon they can legally charge entry, but i'm sure they would have to have a set fee, so can't charge whoever whatever they want.

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

I agree, they could charge different amounts depending on the night/time, but would end up in real trouble if the discriminated for/against anyone.

Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

They can charge whatever they want. If you were being discriminated against on the grounds of sex, race or disability they could get done.
But other than that they can charge whatever they want.
IF they want to charge people wearing orange extra they can do (well, unless a load of Buddhist monks turned up!).
I was discussing this in relation to height with my brother last night (who's a lawyer). Apparently, you can be found guilty of discriminating
against short people but not tall people. IE so a club could refuse to allow anyone in above the height of 6ft and it wouldn't be a problem.
Infact, it's probably encouraged under H+S BS rules.
Infact, you could make a club for midgets and it would be fine. But if you made a similar club for lanky knuckle-draggers (as we like to be known!)
you'ld be acting illegally. Bizarre. Oh well!!!
If you're going to pay money to stay up late drinking you may as well go to one of those clubs with the poles (and I don't mean a load
of builders).

Tegwin - there is more than one way to "Skin a Cat" as they say. You could ask for a reciept for the entry fee... if they ask why you
would want a VAT reciept, it's obviously for TAX purposes. My guess is is that it's a nice little 'earner.... KWIM? You may get
barred as a result though! Although legal, it isn't necessarly right....
