An electric car that's... good?
This has probably been posted before but I'm gonna do it anyway:
Tesla
0-60 in 4 seconds, 130mph top speed, tons of torque all the time, looks great - if this is the future of electric cars then consider me converted!
The only downside is it doesn't actually make any sound, and you can't beat a good V8 rumble

Yea - and for the price you could buy a 7 plus a lifetime worth of petrol.
And until they make clean electricity you are just exchanging car exhaust polution for power station polution and none of the aural pleasure. Maybe a
piece of plastic on the wheel spokes would add some sound to the experience

So it will do 0 to 60 pretty fast, and will get you 200 miles in about an hour and a half at full whack (If it will maintain full power for that long,
which it won't as they expect a charge to last 200 miles with "average" driving), but will then need as little as three and a half
hours to recharge. So that's 200 miles at top whack in at least five hours, an average of 40mph. To be more realistic, say an average moving
speed of 60mph, it'll take you three hours and twenty minutes to go 200 miles with a best charge time of three and a half hours (assuming you
stop at a suitable charging point) then your average speed is then less than 30mph. Some sports car.

Ok it's ain't perfect but it's a big improvement over the Sinclair C5! Other than the short range it looks like a good car to me.

I think the tesla is powered by 6000 laptop batteries - cunning move! I'm aiming for a 20 mile range on my EV. It will be used for going to
work, or the shops. That's 90% of the motoring I do. The Tesla looks fantastic for folk who don't want to go over 200 miles at a time - I
suspect that's most of us! Also the quip about causing the emissions "in the car or in the power station - it's just the same"
is miles from the truth actually - power stations reach around 35 to 40% efficiency. A diesel engine can get near that, but only when going flat out
into a constant (full) load. In a car in town it will average 2 or 3%. You also have to factor in distribution, electric motor efficiency and
charge/discharge efficiency in the EV (say 50%) - but it's still a factor of 5 or more better than a petrol car.
Interesting to see the tesla uses an induction motor - same as mine, less efficient than brushless DC but safer at high speed. And actually a bit of
inefficiency is needed to demist the windscreen.......

So the range is the limiting factor but... I'm sure there will be a fuel cell exchange in most garage forecourts, wont there? That way
it's just a case of replacing the battery (15 minutes) then off you go again.
Secondly... realistically, who would really want to do more than 200 miles in a beautiful sportscar (second car) without stopping to have a look?
Whilst looking recharge!
To be positive - I think it's brilliant and technology will see massive improvements very shortly especially at that sort of cost per mile.
