Classic jags

I am looking for a mk2, s-type or 420 jaguar from the 60's which i will probably 'modernise' for road and the occasional track day, so im not after concours but good condition.
Where is the best place to look for cars? Im keeping an eye out on the e of bay and in jec classifieds, friday-ad etc, but wasn't sure if anyone knew of anywhere else to look.
The other problem i have is that i dont get much time off work so a car located long distance isn't out of the question but i would need to take a day off work so not really practicle as i would need to look at it first.

If you go mk11 then I'm sure that you know to have a GOOD look at where the rear 1/4 elliptic springs attach to the body. MAJOR repair if the rust worm has got into that area.

Beware of the Goldfish in the tulip mines. The ONLY defence against them is smoking peanut butter sandwiches.

Daimler SP250 may be cheaper way to that shape. Lighter engine for more sporty driving and a very tuneable v8 engine!

Money pits unless you pay for a good one, I do not think 4K will cut it. They rot badly everywhere !

Last month you were after an XK8, how about a facelift XJS after 91.

I have had a three of these, 4ltr manual, 4ltr auto and V12. 4ltr auto, not so good as V12 but neither still not as satisfying or as fast as the 4.0ltr manual (unless you leave the Dartford Tunnel at 7000rpm in the v12)

Galvanised body, metric parts same floor plan as DBS and XK8/XKR were last year !

Oh yes, V12 9mpg, on a 100 mile run with cruise in maybe 16mpg, 4.0 manual up to 27mpg, auto around 23mpg.

4.0ltr manual (well mine did) had a decent Getrag G/box, not the same as the 3.6's,.

Regards Mark

420G won't fit on your drive! Biggest production car built in UK. My brother has 2 plus an XJS v12 and an X type.

I was first after a manual xjs but my dad persuaded me to buy a newer jag which is why i wanted an xk8 but i have now decided that as i hardly ever use my car i would be better off with a classic. The 4k from my xj is only half of the money i have a budget of 8k

I think you will find a classic old jag rather nasty to drive, cars have come along a lot since then.

Best thing is to go and try one locally, forget the condition and see how you like the feel.... I once wanted a TR6 but driving one was awful, I also had a proper MGB GT V8, but this only lasted a few weeks. Unless you like the look and feel of old cars in general the way they drive sucks.

Now 8K would get you a nice manual 928 GTS, interiors are a sea of plastic but apart from that superb if a little cramped.

Regards Mark
