Any advice for a newbie please.

Hello all.

I'm new the kit car scene but after many months of thought and finally acceptance by "her indoors" I'm going ahead with my first kitcar build.

I have looked at many sites and read the mainstream magazines and have narrowed it down to 2 models, namely the Tiger Avon and the MK Indy.

I guess that both models have pro's and cons and would like to get some opinions and draw on the experience of you guys to help me decide.

Cost as always is an issue (i'm a tight northerner ) and as far as my "hands on" experience goes I've been dabbling with cars and bikes for about 15 years. My occupation is a precision engineer so i'm not afraid of the technical challenges/aspects involved.

I am leaning towards a car engine version but have not ruled out a bike aspirated build. Again any advice on this score would also be welcomed.

Any pointers and advice you can give would be much appreciated.

Chris,

Hold on tight, amigo - I feel that you are about to get a deluge of views from the seemingly vast numbers of BEC and CEC afficinados in Yaarkshaar - Blag a few rides - That will a.) get you 'proper' hooked and b.) probably solve your BEC/CEC conundrum...

Out of the two from what I have seen I suspect the MK is the better . PS welcome to the nuthouse

Have you not considered the MNR?

I suspect living in Beverley you have seen loads of them on the way to the Vosa place?

I found the 1.8 zetec engine with bike carbs and megajolt the cheapest option for me.

(Dodging flack behind the couch!)

Look at MNR and MAC#1 as the products are good and service excellent.

If it were a toss up between MK and Tiger i would have an MK every time......and i did.....twice

Ever heard of the BIKE ENGINE CAR OWNERS CLUB?

Try to get a ride in both CEC and BEC. You will know which one to have after being out in them.

MNR is a very nice kit with great customer service.

MK is a very good allrounder.

Avon!! All i have to say is BODY WORK!

i have a cec but might bild a bec next time

out off your initial short list MK but haveing built 2 mac#1's then i would say check them out also.
if you want a nice everyday driver choose a car engine if you want a full on adrenaline fueled ear to ear grin then a bike engine is a must.

i'm a newbie too, I've just bought a part built CEC, but I'm selling the zetec engine on bike carbs on Saturday (it was only delivered on sunday) so I can buy a bike engine for it.

I had a go in steve blade engined car and was sold - the power is like a switch, it revs forever and is silly fast.

I guess it depends on what you want the car for, I want it for quick blast to blow out the cobwebs on a weekend or sunny evening - i want it to be a rush - and I want to do occasional trackdays, basically I want a bit of animal on a budget so the small amount of time I get is fun from start to end, hence BEC.

If I wanted something a little more sain i'd have stuck with the cec, i'm sure it would have still been pretty damm quick, but it just wasn't quite what i was after.

dunno about manufacters i'm afraid - i got the cheapest option which is a part built.

Get to MK on a Saturday morning, try a passenger ride in both a CEC and a BEC and then decide which bike engine you want to fit.

Seriously though, it depends what sort of driving you intend doing. If you want to cruise up and down the motorway all day long or tour the country, then a bike engine is what you need.

If you intend having a drive out every now and then, in the evening or at weekends with a few trackday and drag events thrown in, then a bike engine is what you need.

First orf, welcome.

Second orf, as you're a precision engineer (and tight), ignore the advice of all that given above, and build your own.

Not only is it immensely satisfying, you'll be able to build it exactly the way you want it, and it'll cost you half what a kit will cost

As the current builder of a Tiger B6 ( and owner of a Tiger S6 for the previous 7-years) I would have to say...... go for the MK...... or Mac#1.............or MNR VortX.......... or RAW Striker for a 1st time build.

I live in Beverley and own a Tiger Super 6 with a Toyota engine. I love the engine but if buying/building again i would be up the road to Harrogate!!

Hi Chris,
I only live in South Cave and i am building an MK at the moment with a zetec, you are more than welcome to come and have a look. There are a few of us about local to you with MKs.

Havin built an Avon and dealt with MK, MAC#1 and a few other - Don't build an Avon.

From where you live id say try and arrange factory visits to MK, Mac#1 and MNR. All doable in a day and if you pre-book appointments you may be taken out in all 3.
