Smoke at startup.
Hi all, I need a bit of advise. Recently the cambelt on my Renault Scenic 1.9 TDi went and cause the head to crack, a local garage replaced the head
and since that time the car has smoked quite a lot as it is started.
My thoughts were that the valve guide seals were leaking as it was sitting and causing the smoke but the garage has said that its due to the
bearing/seals on the turbo leaking oil into the turbo which then gets blown into the engine. My thoughts are that they are trying to feed me a load of
BS as the turbo won't spin enough during startup as there is not enough exhaust pressure to get it spinning. There is no doubt that its oil
smoke due to the smell of it.
Any thoughts or advise? How can I prove whether its the turbo or not?

Both knackered valve seals and a knackered turbo can result in puffs of smoke on startup.
One way of finding out the difference (though it's not so easy) is to let the car sit overnight then use a bore-scope to look into the bores. If
there's oil pooling it'll be obvious = valve seals....
Can't see quite why the turbo would suddenly start leaking after a head-job. Can see many reasons why the valve-stems might......
I suspect some BS...

I was hoping for an easier and cheaper (free) way to prove this , I would need to find another garage who had one of these bore-scopes to check this
for me I guess, Anyone know of a reputable garage near Hinckley who could do this for me? Even if I did prove it would it help me in any way? I would
have to go to small claims court I guess? I dont think the car is worth the trouble, even in mint condition its only with maybe 2k. Any other
suggestions? Could I ask them to remove the turbo and bypass it and when that didn't work I could put it back on them to sort it?

That's what I was wondering. Whip the turbo off and see if it makes a difference.....
Does the garage have an suggestion for why all of a sudden the turbo is leaking? Are they saying it's a pure coincidence? Sounds a bit fishy to
me....
I'd ask what makes them so sure it's the turbo as opposed to the valve stems seals. Is it a new head that was fitted or 2nd hand?
I'd put it to them (if its 2nd hand head) that the valve seals on their replacement head are knackered and that that is a much more likely
reason for the sudden smoking. That's much more likely than the turbo story....

If it wasn't smoking before, I too smell ratty type things,
As said remove the turbo hose and try it then,
Steve.

Yup, turbo house off where it goes into the engine, if the pipe is smothered in oil then suspect turbo, if not then sounds like secondhand or poorly
recon head stuck on..
