TalkTalk contracting out...

Hi - a question to you guys using BB and phone services.

I've been experiencing problems with TalkTalk from basically day one of the contract, problems starting after transfering over from Tiscali.

After looking at various web-forums and independant web-reviews, it's pretty well documented that TalkTalk throttle P2P servers outside the hours 11pm - 7am. On these forums/reviews it is emerging that Virgin Media is heading the BB/Phone packages for customer satisfaction. I'd like to know of anyone that uses V.Media and whether this also is throttled at any time as forums/reviews are not conclusive one way or the other...

As I currently have TalkTalk BB and Phone, contracting out is becoming a nightmare. No MAC key can be issued as TalkTalk have claimed ownership of the line (they pay my line rental). Enrolling with another ISP means contracting back in to BT for the phone, then out again to 'whoever' ISP... really well thought out Ofcom

Seems like I may loose connectivity for a while whilst this is sorted - unless someone knows different? Your views would be welcome gentlemen and lady...

I'm on Virgin Media and the connection and speed have been faultless even with sever hammering. However, like me most people on VM are probably on cable connections (not ADSL) as VM took over Telewest, so you may not be comparing like with like when it comes to people's ratings.

I imagine the capacity of the cable networks is somewhat greater than the phone network so restrictions are not applied.

Alternative is get BT to put a second line in I had to last year -- think it cost about 120 pounds

I currently have two broadband connections on BT lines one with Be the other with Plusnet both have been 100% reliable and fast -- the Be connection is ADSL2.

Plusnet bandwidth has no restrictions overnight ie 2am to 12 am but they have Peer to Peer traffic shaping in the afternoon and evening ---- speed limits depending on what contract you are on.

I already have two lines... one is BT the other is Talktalk... BT I use for business only as they pay all costs (I like to keep work/pleasure seperate). I was reading about BE - it's the subsiduary of BT go figure?

I have just been quoted £125 to be reconnected to BT? OMG Can this be right?

I started off with Nynex who got taken over by NTL who have been taken over by Virgin Media...

Toward the end of NTL I had a few problems...as I have written about in the past...

Virgin Media has been ace though, and there are no 'caps' 'slow downs' that I have noticed.

I have heard that their customer service leaves a lot to be desired......but in all honesty, I haven't had to use them since they took over.

I am on 4meg and it seems to be very stable (ZDnet bandwidth check) sometimes in the early hours I appear to have more than 4meg .........

When I move I will definitely sign up again with Virgin Media.....

The plot thickens... Talktalk have unbundled my line to LLU and cannot/will not give me a MAC Key to migrate... Upon looking into talktalk and Pipex LLU - JESUS CHRIST!!!!

Hi Fozzie, Virgin Media now have "traffic management" (a cap on downloads) between 4pm and midnight, see here

Well I don't download 'that' much...(the amounts they are talking), so I wouldn't have noticed!

It says only the top 5% of users for a week.

No one else will be affected ....

OK - after being on the phone for hours.... BT have finally agreed to taking me back free of charge... providing I stay with them for 12 months which IMO is fair enough. They will be dismantling LLU (digitally shared line basically) - and they are giving me 30 days grace to test and verify the service is what it says it is.

However, once LLU is dismantled I could leave after 29 days and go to another provider thereby avoiding the 12month contract and getting LLU off of my line. Hmmm.... interesting, very interesting.

It's lovely being 'sung' to by a lady from Newcastle with a rather sexy accent than 2 second delay of Punjabi English drivel... no loss of line and only temporary loss of BB until I find aother provider... roll on V.M.... (well maybe after the statement by Fista). Though I have started to use rapidshare.com for downloading now... extremely quick downloads for little cost.

Have fun out there - and let this be a lesson to us...

I can second UncleFista's comments.

It seems to go on the amout downloaded in a time period rather than an average over the day etc.

If you Dl'd something quite big while your having your dinner, the internet is slow for the rest of the night!.

I would say its NOT averaged out so only the top 5% of downloaders are penalised as they claim

IIRC, You should still be able to get a MAC code even though you're on LLU... brb ...

Right...

Had a quick look through the Ofcom mandatory requirements, and GC22 is the one you want. Unfortunately, it's not good news.

If your voice line wasn't with TalkTalk then a MAC would be mandatory. However because you have a Voice + Broadband package from them, they are probably claiming exclusion from mandatory MAC codes under Annex 1.

PlusNet said pretty much exactly that about 5 minutes before they (allegedly) totally f*cked up implementing it and throttled back pretty much all of their customers to dial-up speeds for a week or so. That was the straw that broke the camels back for me, i was already sick of them changing my T's & C's at will, and mucking up my connection by 'upgrading' me to a Tiscali LLU that halved my sync speed. An then of course, was the rigamarole of 'we can't give you a MAC code now we've upgraded you'. Still, I was only without the internet for 6 weeks, although it was hard work having to deal with that 'real world' thing people keep banging on about

We are on vm as we were an ntl customer, we also use rapidshare and rapidget to queue all of the downloads then start them offpeak if neccessary.

Many thanks Stevebubs for that information - I have already discovered the way... as stated I was lucky they allowed me to migrate FOC! Should have been £70, but with my extensive log of internet disconnects and speed lows and telephone not working they finally gave in.

I managed to get back with BT line for free on one of their cheap rental included packages - now I need the LLU to be ceased (10 days and counting) - then I can find another ISP - I'll be paying more but at least I know I will have reliable phone and (cant be any worse) internet reliability/speed. (Hopes and prays)

Look like VM are getting my vote but will monitor the performance until this connection goes...

Just a point of note - significant portions of VM will be switching to LLU infrastructure for ADSL in the new year.
