Radioheads new album, pay what yoy want for it

Yep i have just bought Radioheads new album from http://www.inrainbows.com/Store/Quickindex2.html

You can pay whatever you want for it – I paid the equivalent to what I’d pay normally but you can buy it for a quid!! It's MP3 at 160kbs

Me personally, I won't be paying anything for it, but then I don't want it either. Never been a fan myself

Seems to me like a gimmick to sell a (reportedly mediocre, though I won't pass judgement as I haven't heard it) album that otherwise wouldn't do very well.

They have no record company and no CD production costs so they will keep the majority of the sale price of each item. I don't know what a band usually gets but it probably means that at only a quid or two they make more than they would from CD sales through a record company!

All that said I think it's a great idea and look forward to finding out what the average price paid over a large number of sales is! I doubt it's a model that will catch on though!

Personally I think it's the way forward, about time Bands made the money for their music rather than the producers and editers...

It's been on five live that Mr Bacon tried to buy it for 1p and it cost him £5+ due to Credit Card charges etc... all a bit of a con me thinks!!!

I won't buy it either - too depressing for me....

Just for the record (no pun intended) there was speculation a few ago that Woolworths were stopping selling albums that they paid the record companies more than £1 for... how much of that would go to the Band???

Radiohead have a bit of a lead with this as they are already a decently large band... so will sell just because... smaller bands stand a better chance going through myspace.com and gigging.... that way there musical skill improves they financially they see the benefit of gigging.

Makes me laugh at X Factor - how many of them over the last 3-4 years have been; honestly, any good... apart from Will Young? Can anyone name the rest? WHo cares? There is only 1 winner - Simon Cowell, the mugs that think they are going to be a success and fall for all this, are right muppets!!!

I think there must be a minimum charge then... how much did you opt to pay to get that CC charge?

hmm, i'd rather listen to it for nothing and then buy it if i like it - its what i normally do (i listen to friends music and then get what i like).

Driving home i was thinking about this whole subject. I remember listening to someone who was saying in the 60's music was huge and people spent a high proportion of their wages buying records. It occurs to me the more accessible music has become the less its been valued. Its like anything, if you have to work for it, you appreciate it more. Between your toy car you've personally built and your tin top - which do you appreciate more? which did you put more effort into?

I'm listening to it right now - quite quirky but still the usual (rather maudlin) style. Certainly not their best anyway imo.

The 'you choose the price' thing is a brave move by the band, and I am convinced that direct downloading is the way things will go in the future. Definitely a nail in the coffins of the fat cat record labels who rip off their artists, which can't be a bad thing.

Cheers,
Raz

Nobody likes the record companies until they want to have them pay for a tour or get their stuff out to the shops. The shops won't take just anybody, and a band website won't generate a lot of interest unless there's a hype started already ie. BBC (for you) or whatever. And who gets their stuff listened to at your BBC? The ones with the contacts. Who has the contacts? That's right, the record companies, that pay for the touring, recording, etc etc. DIY will get most bands nowhere because they don't want to do the work.
