Working around airbags?

I've just got back from rescuing my wife from a nearby car park... the little tab that goes between the ignition lock barrel and the actual ignition switch had broken, and I now need to fit a complete new ignition switch.

Trouble is, some bright spark at Daewoo designed the top of the Matiz steering column so that the steering wheel has to be removed before you can get at the tiny screw that holds the ignition switch in place.

To remove the steering wheel, the airbag has to be removed - and now I'm in unknown territory. The mechanics of removing it seem quite straightforward - flip off 2 covers on the side of the wheel and undo a pair of Torx bolts - but I have no idea of safe practices and procedures when working around these things.

Is it straightforward, or are there hidden dangers that I ought to know about? The service manual has the usual "only trained personnel" instructions...

Ta,
David

If its electrical remove the fuses that are used in the system usually in yellow holders then wait 10 minutes then procede

If its a self contained unit ie no electrics just dont drop it as the jolt would/could set it of

ps how long are your arms

First thing before going anywhere near and airbag is to disconnect the battery lead and remove the fuse that feeds it (belt and braces !) then wait 30 minutes to be sure the back up power supply (a capacitor) has discharged fully.

Then get one of your mates to do it.

Not a good mate, obviously.

Thanks for that info!

My next problem is finding a Torx tamper-proof bit to undo the bolts - it's quite a large size, just a little smaller than the T55 size I once bought for a Pinto head (but that hasn't got the hole up the end, of course!).

Still, it'll give me something to do tomorrow morning while my wife goes to Morrisons...
