Tintop Headgasket Gone - what to do?
Bad bad news on my Merc 190E.
Loses water very quickly, tell-tale mayo under oil cap and now won't start.
The car only cost me £750 but I don't know what to do now. I guess I have three options:
- eBay
- repair
- try to find a replacement motor
It worries me that the thing won't start and I want to get out of a crap situation with the smallest possible impact on the bank balance.
What do you think?

Mayo under the oil cap does not always suggest a head gasket problem. How much water does it lose and where is it going? Check the dipstick or drop
the oil out to see if the oil is contaminated. Check for bubbles in the coolant reservoir wtih the engine running.
Then do a compression check to confirm the gasket is busted. Then decide how much you're willing to spend and if you have the time to fix it
yourself etc....

AS said mayo on filler cap does not always suggest head gasket.
Does it sound like its got compression when it tries to start?

what eactly do you mena by it won't start?
does the engine trun over? if not, then water may have filled up a cylinder preventing piston from moving in it.
remove spark plugs first before truning it over.
do you get spark at all?
if h/g has gone, I would have thought some cylinders would still have compression and fire - you would hear that rtunring over?
some more diagnising is necessary.
chg should be not that hard or expensive to replace yourself - ypou may discover other bad things though.....
