New Beetle - Starting Problems

Any ideas guys? Sister-in-law has a 1.6 51 plate bug but today it just wont start. A few noises but not a hint from the starter motor.

Also struggling to connect the vag-com to it. Says it is not OBDII compatible.

Many thanks,
Steve

Start with the simplest reason – Flat battery

Paul

Always works for me.

Agree with Paul.

If the cambelt is still intact how about a bump start.

Dont ask me how I know to check the cambelt first.

Battery is ok and the cambelt is fine. Havn't tried a bumpstart yet.

Thanks,
Steve

Starter motor jammed? Stick it in gear and rock the car backwards and forwards to try and free it off.........

This might be a bit too obvious.
If the battery is flat the ecu won't be running so no diagnostics.

Check the battery connections if nothing obvious charge the battery for at least 12 hours on a modern battery charger.
Bump starting isn't a good idea if the battery is really flat --- alternators won't charge dead flat batterys

Update, push start and it was away so pointed towards the starter. The vag-com started to work and showed nothing.

Took off the starter and the lead that goes from the solenoid to the starter is completely corroded through.

Job sorted.

Thanks,
Steve
