Well that was close!

Hi all,

just finished fitting wingstays mark 3 (don't ask), took the car out for a bit of a test round the industrial estate near me, building up speed , testing turns and bumps etc, all looks good so go for a big run, got up to about 80mph, and what went through my mind.......

YOU DIDNT TIGHTEN THE WHEEL NUTS!

pulled over sharpsh, checked then drove home very slowly!

morale of the story is Check your nuts!

Now you see

I would have kept that to myself.

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Sounds a bit like my favourite trick...

Tighten the wheel nuts up with the socket... and then foget to take off the Locking wheel nut key!

I've spent many an hour searching for the Key again!... think I need 1 of those red flags on it like aeroplanes etc have!

Well I took off my watch and left it on the rocker cover, finished job replaced bonnet, went for a drive. Watch fell off at a roundabout and I found it afterwards well and truly squashed . Cost a few quid to fix!

Many years ago, I lost my favourite Britool1/2" 9/16" ring spanner after working on my mini.

I found it 3 months and a couple of thousand miles later still attached to the bleed nipple on the drivers side wheel cylinder

Cheers

Mark

Yep I heard you were a bit fast and loose with your nuts.

I've forgot to tighten the wheels before & had a front one come off, just for your peice of mind it was suprisingly easy to control, but I didnt have a corner to negotiate.

My Boss complained for age about the loss of a good 1/2"-9/16" deep crank ring spanner.
We found it a few years later in perfect, rust free condition, inside a tractor gearbox!

I lost the adaptor for the locking nut on my golf wheels, months later I got a puncture & found it still on the nut! good job I've got a centre plate on my wheels!

I once got some new hub-caps from Halfords for my tin-top. I didn't realise that you had to put the wire ring inside the hub-cap to push the arms out (I was in a hurry so just slapped them in place). I thought when I put them on they went on a little easy but hey I guessed they must know what they're doing....

Jumped in the car, got up to about 40 when pretty much simultaneously four hub caps fell off. One bounced on the tarmac and shot up into the air by about 30 feet, never to be seen again. One rolled into the gutter, whilst two went shooting off down the road. One got run over and I found the other one....

Didn't stop laughing for about twenty minutes. Then I realised I'd trashed 30 quid worth of hubcaps!!! Didn't bother with them after that!!!
