Tin top petrol filler

This one will have you running for the tin-top.
After more years driving than I care to admit to I've just learnt that the dashboard fuel guage shows a small petrol pump - no great news there - what I'll bet most drivers don't know is that the pump has a hose on either the right or left hand side showing on which side of the car the petrol tank filler is located.
Strange car dealers, garages, hire companies never mention this - maybe they don't know either?
Be interesting to know if there are any exceptions.
Cheers, Pewe.

A load of balls.

Some gauges have an arrow on them which shows which side the filler is on but the side the hose is on means nothing. Of course there is a 50:50 chance it would be right hence it being easy for this nutsack to be spread around.

Cant say that I had noticed this before but i'll have a look later.

Mind you if this was common knowledge then it would give people even more excuse to do the British thing and que for the pumps that correspond to the side there filler cap is on rather than reaching over which virtually all pumps will do. (sorry one of my pet hates)

Not true on a Nissan Micra.....

edited to say: actually could be talking bollocks. The flap is on the left and the pump sign shows the pump handle on the right. But actually that makes sense cos you'ld want a pump handle on the right to fill up

car dealers, garages, hire companies probably don't mention it, as there's a bigger give away on the outside of the car.

Yeah, it's all about the arrow. Many cars have a little arrow next to the pump symbol, but in at least one case I've seen the arrow and nozzle ore on opposite sides in the symbol.

I agree with Duncan about the irrelevance though. I have not been to a garage in 8 years of driving where I couldn't reach the filler with the pump on the opposite side of the car. Granted you sometimes have to be careful to park very close but most pumps in modern garages have massive long hoses and it really doesn't matter.

I saw this true story on TV about a bloke who lived in a trailer park (it was the US). Came back to his RV to find someone at the side of it with a jerry can and a syphon tube. Tube was in his mouth getting the syphon going (other end was in his RV). Bloke saw the owner and started running away. The owner was old so kept on stopping running but the villainous thief kept on stopping and puking his guts up. This rather intermittent chase went on for a while until the owner get too tired and walked back. The thief ran of into the distance continuing to barf quite often.
The owner went back to see how much fuel had gone from his fuel tank, walked up to his RV and found the fuel tank flap shut. "thats funny" thinks he. Walks round to the other side of the van to find the tank flap open to the septic tank

I have never understood why some people insist on queuing for the pump on the 'right' side for their cars.

I've got twin fillers (to separate tanks) so it doesn't make any difference to me anyway - I just grab the nozzle and pull .... easy when you know how

Cheers,
Raz
