new hi fi system

Brand new Denon AV surround (overkill really, I only have two speakers) versus old Bryston/"who knows what" separates?

Driving Mordaunt Short MS25i speakers.

Toss any and all info you can find here... Much appreciated. My old integrated NAD is too weak and overheats trying to move these speakers. I want at least 100 watts/side.

Depends on application. The multichannel Dennon amp gives you the option to upgrade to 5.1 in the future as I take it has dedicated channels for L, C, R, Ls, Rs and LFE. All you would need to do is buy another stereo pair a centre and subwoofer speaker.

I used to stay in Cobham when I went to the UK many years ago, not far from you. Thanks for the fast reply. Shouldn't you be sleeping??

No intention of doing surround, happy with stereo. I'm more interested in the sound.

If you are more interested in sound then avoid AV style amplifiers but if you want to drive multiple AV sources then go AV.

At last something on the forum I know something about

To be honest cars are my second love. My cinema room is my first! Though my Mac#1 has diverted funds some what away from there recently.

If your more interested in Stereo then go with Bryston. They are the dreadnoughts of amplification and I've yet th hear a bad one. If you want to go down the 5.1 route then Denon are an excellent choice. Need to to know exactly what model your looking at on both to give a proper answer. What sort of budget are you looking at? as their are as many makes of hifi gear as seven manufactures, we might be able to point you in another direction you hadn't thought of?

Cheers

Dave

If I can get a second hand Bryston for less than $500 (20 year old 3b or 4b off Fleaskip) I need to find a preamp. I'd like improvement over the old NAD 7020e, but don't want the total to exceed $1000 (I have an unfinished car to do!!!).

My thinking to date has been that I wanted the bulletproof nature of the Bryston (made 3 hours down the highway from me), but that surely there have been big improvements in sound and reliability in the past 25 years. And of course, I don't want to spend any money.

If you want Hi-Fi without spending a ton of cash, look on ebay for a Pioneer A300.
Getting a bit old now but the sound quality is superb.
These amplifiers were out performing high end amps, at a tenth of the price, when they first came out and still perform really well.

Tell them about the bent treacle edges!

Even a 20 year old Bryston will sound better than 2/3 of the stuff that's out there today. A good amp is a good amp simple as that. I used to have a very nice Cyrus setup, which included a nice pre-amp (Cyrus aCA7.5) which always sounded fantastic (still can't understand why I sold it). Any of the older pre-amps from the likes of Music Fidelity, Audiolab, Creek, Naim, Arcam (heard good things about Rokscan too) would do the Bryston justice.

Another Manufacture often overlooked as they don't charge silly prices and are not quite as in vogue as some of the others are Rotel. My cinema amplification was all Rotel RB1080 based before I went for on board amplification with a new receiver (to generate some cash for the car!). Always sounded superb, never stressed, with cracking highs and the bass was so tight you could almost twang it

cheers

Don't forget Rega - Maia power amp is 85 watts/channel but they're pretty powerful sounding watts
