Toyota Yaris Running rough

Alright guys,

Got a phone call from my wife last night on her way to work that the engine manangement light was flashing and the car was running rough at idle.

I swapped cars with her and drove it home. At idle it appears to be running on 3 cylinders but after a few coughs picks up fine. At motorway speed there was no loss of power (not that there is much to lose). The light was going from flashing to constant.

She had just filled it up with petrol (and yes I did check it was petrol) and I was wondering if it could be a bad batch of fuel.

I am going to change the plugs this afternoon and see if that helps.

Any opinions would be great, appart from selling the thing.

I've got a celica that started doing this. Ended up being one of the rings had gone, but once you rev it up, it would build compression and fire the cylinder

had a car do this a few years back, in our case one of the valves had burnt out.

Hopefully a bit less doomful of a suggestion than the others

My dad had a similar fault on his car and it turned out to be a HT lead.

The engine was a little lumpy on idle but the higher the rev's the smoother the engine got.

Probabyl a cheeper option to try first along with the change of plugs.

I am willing to bet it is an ignition HT fault.
When were the plugs last changed ?
Modern service schedules make the intervals between plug changes too long as a result the plug gaps become much too wide and either the plug lead or coil pack insulation breaks down or the coil pack gets zapped.
In really bad cases even the ECU can get zapped.

It has probably been missing slightly for a couple of weeks or more but your swimbo didn't notice.
It would be good also to get the OBD codes read and cleared but not essential.

I don't know much about the ignition system on these cars but it seems to be 4 seperate coil packs,

For NGK plugs the gap should be 032" (0.8mm))

For Denso plugs the recomended gap is 0.044" which seems odd as wide gaps tend to cause HT problems..

I suspect you will end fitting 4 plugs and at least one new coil pack.

My mums 1 litre yaris did a similar thing but not quite as bad. Think i got it before it developed. Changed the plugs. Perfect. They have a coil per cylinder. I bet its either a plug or one of them. Very common.. Mums started as a slight misfire low down when u revved it.

Pull the plugs out and see which is the wrong colour. Try a set of plugs. If that doesnt cure it try a coil pack.

Also if the fuel came from tesco it might be worth getting the fault codes read. If its the lambda sensor then it might be yet another batch of shite fuel. They have had quite a few boughts which have been kept quiet.

Was it definatley unleaded she put in?? Not super or anything like that?? They dont like it much.

I'm such an idiot!

I screwed up big time! Went to the local motor factors to get plugs etc, and told them it was a 1 litre yaris, age etc. Gave me all the bits. Took the old plugs out and did not notice anything to bad with them. Installed the new plugs and tried to start the car.

Would not start and made a strange noise. Scratched my head for a bit then took the plugs back out, to my horror the new plugs were longer and went in deeper, they had all been twatted by the cylindar.

Feeling angry at the motor factor and myself for not looking at what I was doing.

So looks like a trip to go and get a hyness manual then take the head off and see what the damage is. I have a feeling that it might be cheaper putting a replacement engine in.

If you think you will end up replacing the engine try fitting a set of the correct plugs first, you may get away with it? at worst it will cost you a set of plugs.

Do I have any kind of claim with the motor factor?

Doubt you will have damaged much other than the new plugs.

I'd try your old plugs back in and see if everything works. Fingers-crossed...
