2000 BMW 316I SE AUTO egine size?
theres a 2000 BMW 316I SE AUTO on ebay but the chap states that the engine size is a 1895cc, i thought 316 meant 1600cc ??
What should it be?

Advantages: nice bodystyling, smooth drive, lots of extras, 37mpg on 1.9 engine, decent sound system,
Disadvantages: no alarm just immobiliser, servicing bit pricey, acceleration bit slow in 1st gear

Look it up on Parkers.co.uk 'facts and figures section'. At some point bmw up'd the engine spec for the given models, the 316 became
a 1.8 and 318 became a 2ltr, not sure what year/models though.

it's wonderful isn't it - the wife had a 316 which was a 1.6, my mate had a 316 which was a 1.8.
My uncle used to work for BMW, he told me there was a good reason for it, but I'm blown if I can remember what it is now, only that the result
was a massive money saving exercise by BMW.
(really helpful post, eh )
ETA - watch the heads on them, the wifes AND my mates were both effectively written off by them cracking.

maybe economies of scale?
1.6 was probably cheap to make but used in so few vehicles it was cheaper to produce more 1.8 units as they were more widely used in more of their
range, probably shared more components or block with different bolt on bits, cams etc or summat for different outputs.

Even back in the E30 era a 316 could actually be a 1.8, its never been a 100% way to tell the engine size.
The reason was something to do with company car tax rules.
iirc even the current 2007 318d is actually a 320. BMW now use it to differentiate between engine power outputs (143bhp on the 318 and 170 on the 320,
yet both are 1995cc)

I still don't understand why bigger engines cost as much more as they do because all the costs except material are identical - why don't
they just settle on one size per engine type - ie 2000 cc for four cylinder and 3000 cc for sixes and 4000cc for V8's and be done with it -
then pistons valves conrods etc could be the same accross the range.
I'm sure economies of scale would then kick in and significantly reduce vehicle costs.
Of course that's the last thing the manufacturers want to do because the difference in cost between 1400 and 2000 models is nearly all profit at
the moment.
Most probably it will take one of the Indian manufacturuers to wake up to this and really put the cat amongst the pidgeons.
